Asda launches a £5 prepay mobile tariff

Phases out landline phones in stores
Mon Oct 10 2011, 13:30

UK BUDGET SUPERMARKET Asda has halved the price of its cheapest prepay mobile tariff to £5 as it looks to lure in cash strapped consumers.

The firm is launching a trial of the new Asda Mobile tariff, which offers users 100 minutes and 100 texts for £11 less than its standard tariff offering the same amount.

The pay as you go tariff is one of the cheapest on the market, although others have offered similar deals. Earlier this year, Virgin Mobile launched a £5 tariff, but it was only available for a short period of time.

Asda said it is also phasing out sales of landline phones in its stores after sales of the devices began to plummet. James McMurrough, Asda Mobile buyer, said the £5 tariff "shows that traditional landline usage may soon be a thing of the past". µ
