APPLE FOUNDER STEVE JOBS has died at the age of 56, the company has confirmed.

Jobs had only recently stepped down from his post, handing the chief executive role over to Tim Cook.

The Apple founder had a long-running battle with cancer. Jobs had previously received treatment for pancreatic cancer and underwent a liver transplant in 2009.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," Apple's board of directors said in a statement.

"Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives."

Apple has updated its homepage with a full size image of Jobs, and an additional message.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the site reads.

“Those of us who have been fortunate to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Apple is asking people to email rememberingsteve@apple.com to share thoughts, memories and condolences. µ
