ALCOHOLIC DRINKS companies including Baileys and Smirnoff are introducing a social media code of practice that will see under 18-year-olds banned from their Facebook pages.
According to the Telegraph, alcohol companies admitted that social networking web sites are now often the main route for promoting alcoholic drinks.
As well as restricted access for under 18s, advertising will only be placed in environments where more than 70 per cent of viewers are over 18.
These guidelines will extend responsible alcohol advertising to brand pages on Facebook as well as blogs and mobile apps, the European Forum for Responsible Drinking (EFRD) said.
The drinks industry sees self-regulation as key to avoiding a ban on promotion, such as that imposed on tobacco firms.
Alan Butler, chairman of the EFRD said, "Digital marketing is becoming increasingly important in our engagement with consumers. These new guidelines will ensure that we apply the same high standards to all new media channels and technologies including social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook." µ
