Chinese students revolt against Apple

Promo store has no place on campus

FRUIT THEMED GADGET SELLER Apple has offended some Chinese students by announcing plans to put a cathedral to its wares on their campus.

According to the Chinese Global Times, Apple plans to set up a showcase of its products at Peking University next week. While it says that the devices will be there to help students, the people it wants to help are protesting against it.

"It's totally against the spirit and environment of the library," a student named Chen told the Global Times. "Apple should have discounts or give-back activities if they want self-promotion, other than introducing this commercial thing into a sacred place like this."

Plans to sell the items are being denied, at least by one anonymous library employee, but it seems that the idea of an Apple Store in a library is a bridge too far for some. Particularly when it has been suggested that phone cases and earphones are on display behind its glass walls.

"It's good to have a digital service to help students study, but the location should be somewhere independent that does not disturb others," said Peking University professor Xia Xueluan to reporters.

Protest, it seems, is quite a strong word here, and another student gave a perfectly natural sounding announcement of support. "I'd like to see another place in the school where students can have more study resources with the assistance of digital products," said a female called Guan.

Another is pictured looking at the store while holding books, though we might have expected those books to be bricks. µ
