Amazon pick up lockers could debut in the US this Friday

So 1999

BOOKSELLER Amazon's in-store pick up lockers could be open as early as this Friday in the US, according to reports.

The service, tipped as being trialed at US 7-Eleven stores, was hunted down by web site Geekwire at the 1522 East Madison Street 7-Eleven in Seattle. They were told by a clerk that the store plans to activate them by the end of the week.

The idea will potentially allow customers ordering from Amazon who don't know if they will be at home or in the office to pick up their goods from a locker. The different size cabinets are managed by a keypad and monitor in the middle of the unit much like a cashpoint.

Amazon has not confirmed that it is trialing the system and we are not sure if we are excited at the prospect of it coming to the UK. Pick up lockers seem so very 1999 and we are happier to have our goods handed to us than have to go out and track them down.

It is expected that shoppers will be sent a unique passcode that can be unlocked via a barcode to claim their deliveries.

Although the trials should start this week, a full rollout across the US isn't expected until next Summer. µ

Not altogether bad

I sort of like this as an option, with the mail you have to be home all day and then run like mad to the door to not have the guy be gone already, and with this you don't have to use your ID like you do with getting the package from one of the last remaining post-offices the next day after standing in line.

And @'Snideley Whiplash', scamartist using other people's addresses and intercept stuff, and this on the other hand has CCTV monitoring.

And to the author: some things were decidedly better in 1999. thanks to all the US inspired privatizing the service experience for customers often got sharply reduced.

Excellent!

Now I have somewhere safe to ship merchandise ordered online using stolen credit card numbers.

Thanks Amazon!
