SMILEY FACED FIRM LG has hinted at a thinner version of its Optimus 3D smartphone that could be as thin as 7mm.
We reviewed the Optimus 3D back in July and one of the downsides was the size of the phone, which is a bit chunky. LG is going to sort out this issue with a slim edition of the phone that it could bring out next year.
Speaking to Pocket-lint LG's Dr Henry Noh said, "Everyone knows that's this [The Optimus 3D] is not the slimmest and sexiest phone on the street. We want to make it a little slimmer."

At least he admits that the handset is a little on the chunky side, but that could change, as he talked of the possibility of a 3D phone that is only 7mm thick.
Noh said, "Next year, all the phones are going to be as thin as, let's say, 6mm. You throw in 3D, and because of the thickness and stuff, it becomes 7mm. But I bet you 90 per cent of the population won't know the difference."
A difference of only 1mm is quite good and if the firm manages to produce a 7mm model of the Optimus 3D then that will be a reduction of 5mm from the present model.
If that wasn't enough, Noh plans to reach a stage where adding 3D technology to a device won't make it any thicker, and said, "Eventually, we want to make it so that having the 3D won't necessarily mean that it's going to be thicker. That's going to be a differentiating factor that comes for free to the user." µ

While thinness is nice, it can mean that a smaller battery has to be used - AT&T is going to offer a thinner Galaxy S II phone that has a smaller battery.
Of course, if you use a protective case for your smartphone, thenyou give up alot in thinness. My son has an iphone 3GS, with a heavy duty case - it at least doubles the thickness of the phone. But he drops it almost every day, and it has fallen out when he was riding his bike. Two years later and the phone still works fine.
