JAPANESE HARDWARE OUTFIT Toshiba has announced its ZL2 TV in a move that pushes 3D technology forward.

The ZL2 television set is the first glasses free 3D TV that will be available outside the Japanese market. It follows Toshiba's glasses free 3D laptop that it unveiled in July.

Toshiba said, "The ZL2 boasts a range of leading technologies designed to provide a revolutionary 2D and 3D viewing experience, including face tracking, Resolution+, Auto Calibration, 2D to 3D conversion, and Smart TV features including Toshiba Places."

Like the Qosmio F750 3D laptop, the ZL2 has an in-built camera that tracks the user's face so it can adjust the image accordingly. Unlike other glasses free devices the 3D image is not restricted to one viewer. The firm claims there are up to nine different viewing positions.

We don't know the technical breakdown in terms of what resolution each user sees or why the limit is nine, but we have asked Toshiba and will update this story when it gets back to us.

The ZL2 boasts a rather large 55in screen with whopping quad HD 3840x2160 resolution. The TV is bursting with technology including WiFi, DLNA, Resolution+, 2D to 3D conversion, auto-calibration, Smart TV and Toshiba's Cevo engine.

The TV will have built-in Freeview HD and will support USB hard drive video recording. There will also be a remote control app for Apple Iphone users.

Tohsiba has said the ZL2 will be available in the fourth quarter but has yet to reveal pricing. But you can bet that this TV is going to set you back a fair amount. µ

is 3D is just another fad.

Most people can't afford this. 3d isn't worth 11,000$ USD

That's not going to go over very well with this economy. Maybe if they get it to a 1/4 of that price, even then. That's iffy at best.

Even if it does catch on, the price will kill it for many people.

3d isn't worth 2,000 usd let alone 11,000
