JAPANESE ELECTRONICS GIANT Sony has announced its HMZ-T1, or Personal 3D Viewer, which will tip up in November.
The headset, which could be considered an updated version of the View-Master G from the 1960s, uses dual 0.7-inch HD OLED panels - one for each eye - with 1280x720 resolution, which Sony says is equivalent to watching a 750in theatre screen.
Sony said, "The device adopts the 'Dual Panel 3D Method' which consists of separate panels for the left and right eye in order to display independent HD picture quality to each eye, which realize 3D vision."

Because the device uses a separate screen for each eye, the issue of crosstalk is completely eliminated and Sony touts viewing angles of 45 degrees.
The Personal 3D Viewer sits on the head and includes 5.1 virtual surround sound. The headset has various buttons so the user can control the volume and do normal things like play and pause the video.
An image is sent to the device via a cable from a processor unit which has HDMI ports so devices such as a Blu-ray player or PC can be connected.
The Personal 3D Viewer is set to tip up on 11 Novemeber in Japan for around 60,000 Yen (£480), according to Reuters. µ

It was never popular because all previous versions used crappy 320x240 screens - and were still pretty expensive, while any decent resolution version went up in the 20 thousand dollar and higher..
And this kind of thing is nice to have available for those that need it, and it's obviously not for mobile use.
Now let's hope sony doesn't have a patent and some other company that you can actually do business with will release one, and this time with the obvious inclusion of a head-tracker so it can be used for remote robotics and games, those sensorchips are in every phone and part of every gamesconsole and cheap and really a must for a headmounted display.
I'm looking forward to this, I'm pleased that it can be fed by a HDMI cable and is not tied to using solely with Sony's console.
The only negative is that I had hoped that as OLED screens are flexible that they would have gone with one wrap around screen filling your field of view and used a shutter setup to achieve 3D.That would have given a much more immersive experience. The way they are doing it you will still be looking at a square screen.
Why does it matter if it has a 45 degree viewing angle? It's strapped to your face.
Consumers are siding with slim, simple, practical, comfort and ease of use.
Epic FAIL ... too clunky.
Sony is in reverse, again.
I was an avid Sony consumer until they started giving attention to the less important things (like their anti-piracy crusade), while competitors were passing them by with quality products.
I have my popcorn on my lap, waiting to see the crumbling demise of Sony.
i thought the whole world came to a sort of consensus in which it was decided that we don't want to wear big stupid head gear contraptions in order to view 3d content. this idea is decades old and has never been adopted by.. anyone.
