SHINY TOY MAKER Apple has booted the UK financial newspaper, the Financial Times (FT) from its Apps Store.
The shoe has been waiting to fall for some time now and it is around two months since a deadline for compliance with Apple's rules came into force. Paidcontent reports that no compromise could be reached, and thus the FT now has a homeless IOS app.
Earlier the FT said that it was in a Mexican standoff with Apple over its subscription model, which sees the latter take a larger share of fees, 30 per cent, than the FT would like. In response, this June the FT launched its own web application that can run on any tablet.
It is understandable, perhaps, that the Financial Times, which has been a newspaper in the UK for some time, would baulk at the idea of a 30 per cent Apple bite of revenue, and last month it reported that other firms were also resisting Apple's financial demands.
These firms, which include Amazon and Spotify, were also concerned about Apple's decision to force them to remove links to their own web sites in the Apple Store.
Apple gave firms two months to put up or shut up about its change in terms, and those two months are now at an end. Almost as soon as the changes were announced the FT began pushing users to its web application, offering them the promise of more regular updates as a sweetener.
"We're encouraging our readers to switch immediately to the new FT web app, as many new features and sections will be added over the coming weeks. Make sure you don't miss out on these updates," it said.
At the time the FT appeared to have already walked away from its Apple store release and warned its users that the Apps Store version would never be updated again. µ
