MAKER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP has taken to the internets to explain the changes it announced last week and reassure those customers that bought into the future of WebOS.
The changes, ditching WebOS devices including the Touchpad tablet, and the suggestion that it will drop its PC business dropped jaws and raised eyebrows everywhere.
Mark Budgell is a social media strategist on the HP PR team and for some reason he volunteered to explain what was going on, and not, for example, HP CEO Léo Apotheker.
"First," he said, "I'd like to reiterate an important point. Regardless of what happens in the coming days and weeks, we are committed to maintaining our status as the [number one] PC businesses in the industry."
Budgell said that the firm is not leaving the PC business, but intends to keep it going strong in some way.
"Whether the company is spun off, sold or kept in the HP portfolio, the team here remains committed to creating and supporting great products and services for customers like you all over the world," he explained, adding that people could still buy its PCs with confidence.
The social media strategist added that the leadership team at HP is all excited about the changes, which is a positive thing to say, but weird when you consider the ramifications, and he said that HP promises to honour warranties on existing units.
"We absolutely stand by our PC products and will continue to honor all warranties and provide support as you need it," he added. µ

Apotheker should change his name to Apocalypse for the scale of the mess he's caused. He's pretty much gone and done a Gerald Ratner but on a MUCH bigger scale. If your a large scale corporate would you invest in a company where you have no idea who or what state your support will be coming from in years to come. HP "had" a good package with it's Carepacks, you knew you would get support and where it was coming from. They've blown this out the water now and you would need to be as crazy as Apocalypse to buy into HP kit at the moment.
With this mess all over the news, the same is also occurring with home consumers. I've seen them in retail stores already asking "but that company went bust didn't it"...ok they have no idea what the mess with HP is, but they don't want to touch any HP product unless it's in the bargin bin like the Touchpad.
HP number one PC maker at the moment. Next quarter it won't be in the top 5.
Christof might be onto something...
Have HP gone completely bonkers?? Your number one in the world for PC sales, you've spent millions on web OS and they just want to either ditch it, or flog it off to someone else.
Doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something?
