INTERNET GIANT Google is adding verification badges to identify users of its social networking web site Google+.
The verification process will start with famous people who have been added by many members of the public as contacts. It will then roll out to those that aren't as famous or popular, Google official Wen-Ai Yu said in a blog post.
However, at the moment, Google is aiming to point users towards the official accounts of famous Google+ account holders so they can add them to Google+ Circles to follow their public posts.
When users visit the profile of a celebrity or public figure, they will see a verification badge next to the profile name.
Social networking web sites such as Twitter also use verified accounts to make people prove who they really are.
Wen-Ai Yu said, "We're starting to roll out verification badges on profiles so you can be sure the person you're adding to a circle is who they claim to be. Check out the video below (or my profile) to see what these verification badges look like."
He concluded, "For now, we're focused on verifying public figures, celebrities, and people who have been added to a large number of Circles, but we're working on expanding this to more folks." µ
That's microsoft passport right? So time to sue the hell out the idiots microsoft, gogogo
I wonder what happens in the following scenario:
Famous person John Smith
Peon John Smith
Peon registers first, gets audited as being a real John Smith.
Fan Fred Smith turns up, and links to Peon John Smith (who has a nice badge).
Lots of other Fans also add the Peon account to their circles.
Celebrity also registers, and also gets audited.
Both have 'identity verified' at this point.
... perfectly legitimate from the point of view of the original John Smith, but the badge has not reduced the confusion regarding the celibrity.
The end of online anonymity is in sight. Celebrities are used first to make it appear glamorous, but will soon be mandatory. And then go_ogle will be able to track you perfectly, feeding that to the surveillance agencies.
This is just another step to a practical implementation of "1984", we can watch it be assembled. I'm sure "lawnorder" conservatives will be able to convince themselves that a fascist police state is actually good, and that kids will embrace it merely because "new", and soon think that being monitored all the time is normal, but it means the eventual end of liberty and even end of humanity.
