HP Touchpad 16GB is slashed to $99 in the US

Cheap as chips

MAKER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP's Touchpad has been slashed to as little as $99 in the US, following its decision to shut down its WebOS line of smartphones and tablets.

The Touchpad 16GB model is available from $99, with Best Buy, which reportedly had seen poor sales of the device, reducing the price to $100. The Touchpad 32GB model now sells for as low as $149 at some retailers in the US.

The tablets apparently have sold out almost everywhere, however.

It is possible that the extreme price cuts will expand to the UK, where it is thought the HP Touchpad has also been hit by poor sales.

So far, Amazon UK has reduced the price of the 32GB version slightly to £399 from £422, while the 16GB version is £312.

Currys has reduced the 16GB version from £399 to £350.

HP announced last week that it would no longer make WebOS smartphones and tablets and is considering selling off its PC business.

In the conference call announcing these changes, HP CEO Leo Apotheker stamped his name on the decisions. "I am taking ownership for these decisions and investments," he said.

"Our TouchPad has not been gaining enough traction in the marketplace. We have made the difficult but necessary decision to shut down the WebOS hardware operations."

Recently The INQUIRER reported that Best Buy was sitting on a stack of 200,000 HP Touchpads and wanted to send them back to the maker of expensive printer ink.

HP had already cut the prices of its Touchpads in the US, cutting the price of the 16GB model to $450 and the 32GB version to $550. µ

HP WIPED OUT LIBYA

QADAFFI'S REGIME ENDED TODAY, IS THAT SIMPLE COINCIDENCE OR (MORE LIKELY) WAS QADAFFI TRYING TO RUN LIBYA OFF HIS TOUCHPAD. SHOULD OF BEEN USING IPAD, DIMWIT!

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO, HMM.

Sell like hotcakes

At this price they deserve to sell well. I suddenly want one. Until I see its not yet cut price in the UK. HP should realise that price is the way to beat the iPad. However if they are pulling out of this and Desktop manufacturing I guess they don't really care anymore. They really are about to go down the pan. I wont buy Dell so I guess its Acer!

Flyer I saw yesterday had all you want at $449.

Apparently the news hadn't gotten into old fashioned print. As I've said all along about the Ipad: be a nice toy at $99 -- not that I've ever buy or have even if given to me anything made by Apple.

iPad killer

The only way any of the major manufacturers can hope to take on the iPad in this market is by killing Apple on price, hit all the usability points that Apple has but undercut significantly.

Cheap in Canada too

Canada's big electronics retailers dropped the price on the Touch Pad to match the Australian $99/$149 combo.

Some US sites are reporting this as well.

Needless to say, the HP units - 'dud' as they are cracked up to be - are being snapped up by the 'ignorant'.

There is NOTHING wrong with the Touchpad at this price.

Other Mfgrs should observe ... and learn.

HP TouchPad Firesale

I've got my money waiting right here. If it goes down to £99. Any more and I wont be budging. Actually as a matter of principle we should demand a $99 price.
But, alas something tells me it'll be something like £150 - £200.
*wonders off to check if their phones are any good*
