SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft has inadvertently let slip that Windows 8 will have an App Store.
Microsoft has said that it will start to communicate a lot more about its upcoming Windows 8 operating system and the first thing the firm decided to do was a roll call of the divisions that are working on churning out its next big money spinner.
The list contained few surprises with teams such as Kernel Platform, Graphics Platform and Human Interaction Platform, but one stood out - the App Store team.
It's likely Microsoft won't call its app store "App Store" unless it wants a shakedown from Apple, but it is likely to raise a few eyebrows among software publishers. There's no word on whether Microsoft's Windows app store will be tied in with the firm's Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, though given the tight integration Microsoft likes to promote between its products, that possibility does exist.
Apple has already taken its App Store onto its Mac OS X operating system, using it to distribute its latest Mac OS X Lion operating system among many other software titles. Amazon has also launched its own application store, though in Amazon's case, it's more like an extension of its web site with a download link.
However Microsoft has a chance to usurp all current app stores, simply due to the number of machines that will have Windows 8 installed on them. Few application developers and software houses would want to miss out on a potential audience of hundreds of millions, though it will be interesting to see if Microsoft lends the hand of cooperation to other app stores to avoid potential allegations of anti-competitive actions.
What is clear from Microsoft's impending Windows app store is that purchasing software is moving towards instant gratification, so long as you have a fast broadband internet connection. µ
