Motorola leaks its Droid HD smartphone

Almost a tablet
Thu Aug 18 2011, 15:52

PICTURES of US phone maker Motorola's Droid HD smartphone have been leaked on the internet.

The handset is running Android, of course, which appears to be and what we hope is Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The smartphone has a whopping 4.5in screen with qHD resolution - 540x960 or possibly 720x1280 - according to Engadget.

The Droid HD has an 8MP rear facing camera with flash and on the side are microUSB and microHDMI ports. There is a 3.8V lithium ion battery and a microSD card slot.

If the folks at Engadget are right then there is also a side mounted microSD card slot with a SIM card slot next to it. The opposite side has the volume rocker and power button.

We don't know any specifications for the processor, RAM or internal storage but if these are good then the Droid HD could be a seriously high end, competitive smartphone.

This is all we have so far, apart from the fact that the handset looks rather thin. Perhaps Motorola is aiming to challenge others like Samsung's Galaxy S II and Sony Ericsson's Arc. µ

well

I just calculated that the new Motorola held at arms length (say 36 inches) has the same angular size as my iPhone held at 28 inches,

So ....

Option 1: throw iPhone away and spend hundreds of pounds on new Motorola

Option 2: hold iPhone a bit closer to face

Hmmm.

Bigger & bigger & bigger...oh my!

When I picked up a new Nokia N800 internet tablet way back in early 2008 I never imagined that a mobile phone would have a larger screen than its massive (at the time) 4 1/8" 400x800 display. Of course Nokia would have been way ahead of the game had they included a sim card slot but were already showing their amazing short-sighted effing stupidity by omitting one...but hey, that's Nokia.

This new Mo-Goo-Rola model looks great but Samsung is releasing its new 5.3" display Galaxy Q next month so this one appears to be too 'little' too late to market. Even engadget didn't speculate on a possible release date so by the time it is actually released how will it fare in the market? If it does have an HD display that will certainly be a compelling feature.

I'm just wondering how consumers will react to carrying around these increasingly huge phones. Dell was unable to make a dent in the market with its now defunct 5" LCD Streak and even the Iphone 5 is rumored to only have a 4" screen, up from 3.5".
Let's face it, with each new model these devices are rapidly growing into tablet size territory, i.e., too big for pockets, and with diminishing easy portability. What's needed are foldable/roll-up LCD screens already long in development. No matter what, this 'mine is bigger than yours' battle is going to get interesting...at least in the smartphone arena.

So would this be...

a Google "Droid HD", or does the current sale of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.

Or does Motorola get to retain their Android Line of Phones and Tablets?
