Amazon applies for a mobile phone airbag patent

Stops screen shattering
Mon Aug 15 2011, 15:35

BOOKSELLER AMAZON'S CEO Jeff Bezos has had an epiphany and applied for a patent to deploy an airbag if a mobile device is dropped by the user.

The patent filing was submitted in February but has only just been made public. According to the Telegraph, it could see tiny airbags deployed from the phone if the in-built accelerometer detects that it is falling.

The patent for the invention has not yet been granted.

So intricate is the filing that it also suggests using a laser or radar to determine the distance between the handset and the ground. It also suggests that a gyroscope or jets of compressed air could alter the angle of the phone, or springs could be released from the casing.

The application describes a method for "determining if a risk of damage to the portable device from the impact exceeds a damage threshold; when the risk of damage to the portable device exceeds the damage threshold: altering the orientation of the portable device such that the air bag first impacts the surface; and deploying the airbag prior to impact with the surface".

Does anyone else also think he's daft? µ

ROI

Scenario 1: Surviving regular phone
You drop your $300 phone with a $20 rubber case. The phone lives.
Total Cost: $320

Scenario 2: Destroyed regular phone
You drop your $300 phone with a $20 rubber case. The phone is destroyed.
New phone $300
Total Cost: $620 (reuse the case)

Scenario 3: Surviving Air bag phone
You drop your $800 airbag phone. The air bag deploys. The phone is saved. However, Apple charges $100 to recharge the airbag.
Total cost: $900

Scenario 4: Destroyed Air bag phone
You drop your $800 airbag phone. The air bag deploys. The phone is still destroyed. You send a letter to Apple and they tell you that you dropped it incorrectly. New phone: $800
Total Cost: $1600

Is bragging rights worth $980 to have a phone with air bags?

Or...

Or you could just get the new Casio Phone. It's a G-shock, so it's waterproof & shock resistant.

Daft?

Only ones daft are we, you might not realize it but you just witnessed a patent troll giving birth to another of its dastardly children. As with all its children we'll end up funding this one too, one way or another.

SIM CARD

STILL DOESNT HELP IF YOU DROP YOUR PHONE IN THE BOG, YOU KNOW FROM TAKING VOYERISTIC HOMOSEXUAL SNAPS OF BOYS GOING WEE AND HIS HANDS GET ALL SWEETY AND DROP THE PHONE IN THE BOG. NO HELP AT ALL.
HEY ISNT THAT THE POINT OF THE SIM CARD? YOU BREAK YOUR PHONE, SO YOU EXTRACT THE SIM CARD AND TAKE YOUR NEYBORS PHONE AND NOW ITS YOUR PHONE?
I HERD SOMEBODY PATENTED SWINGING SIDEWAYS ON A PLAYGROUND SWINGSET FOR THE SAME REASON, TO DEMONSTRATE HOW EASY IT IS TO GET FOOLISH PATENTS.
GOTTA LOVE IT.

I would like to believe...

I would like to believe that Bezos filed this, tongue-in-cheek, as a snide crack at Apple's notoriously-fragile iPhone with the glass front and back. After all, he has the money for making $5000 jokes.
