CHIPMAKER Intel has announced software upgrades for three of its processors to improve performance.
Intel's Upgrade Service offers owners of two Core i3 chips and a Pentium chip performance updates. The Core i3 processors in question are the 2312M and 2102 and the upgrades will take them up to the 2393M and 2153, respectively. The Pentium G622 can be upgraded to a G693.
Intel said, "With these upgrades, customers will enjoy: Better performance for photo, video, and music tasks. Better responsiveness for everyday PC activities. Better responsiveness for PC productivity at work or at home."
The upgrades to the 2102 and G693 offer higher processor frequencies whilst the upgrade on the 2321M increases cache size.
In real life terms the upgrade will offer faster performance across tasks such as Microsoft Excel and Windows Live Photo Gallery. After upgrade the Core i3 2393M shows a 19 per cent improvement on both these tasks.
The Core i3 2153 offers a more modest 15 per cent increase in performance but the Pentium G693 boasts a massive 23 per cent enhancement compared to the baseline G622 in some benchmarks.
A software application installer will guide users through the upgrade but a code is necessary, which can be purchased from the PC manufacturer. µ
remember when apple released a wireless card called card called the airport?
The chips supported n no problem, but since the driver apple release with the product didnt have it unlocked. They decided they were going to charge for it. No wireless N on a core duo mac?

Yeah thats one shitty apple move by intel, instead of companies learning what not to do. They learn to see what they can get away with. One example, microsoft and google with their application stores. WTF do we want a gimped OS that doesnt do copy and paste uniformly across all applications.
i remember this was first announced as their "strategy" when they launched the chips -
and the first question was, how much (not answered here?! come on inq journos ffs), and then secondly if it costs, can / will / when will the updates be cracked / hacked and posted on your fave torrent site.
watch this space i guess - we only have half the story so far from this pretty piss poor article
We need a better analogy. This is more like you bought and paid for a railway car (chips are in the physical, not virtual world) and after purchase they said you can't sit in the front unless you pay again.
Scott: If you buy a second class railway ticket do you expect to travel in first class at no extra expense?
You bought a cheaper product with lesser performance and this allows you to upgrade for a fee if you want to.
Having to pay for what you should be getting for free.
