Windows 7 will lead Microsoft operating systems this year

Bye bye Windows XP
Tue Aug 09 2011, 15:06

ANALYSTS at Gartner have forecast that Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system (OS) will be running on 42 per cent of in use PCs by the end of the year.

The means the end of Windows XP dominance and is a result of improvements to IT budgets this year and last, according to Gartner. It has also helped that 94 per cent of new PCs are being shipped with Windows 7 this year.

Annette Jump, research director at Gartner said, "By the end of 2011, nearly 635 million new PCs worldwide are expected to be shipped with Windows 7. Many organisations have been planning their deployment of Windows 7 for the last 12 to 18 months, and are now moving rapidly to Windows 7."

However, Windows isn't the only operating system to see higher take-up. Mac OS X saw an increase of 0.7 per cent in shipments between 2008 and 2010 and Gartner predicts it will grow to 4.5 per cent of PCs by the end of this year and on to 5.2 per cent by 2015.

Gartner said, "Shipments will grow stronger in mature markets where consumers are buying into the Apple product ecosystem."

The forecast predicts that Windows 7 will be the last of Microsoft's operating systems to be deployed through "big corporate migration". Gartner believes that organisations will turn to "alternative client computing architectures" and opt for virtualisation and cloud solutions over the next five years.

Because of the barrier of application migration from Windows, Gartner expects Linux to remain a niche OS with a market share of less than two per cent. As for other OS options such as WebOS, Android and Chrome OS, well, Gartner doesn't think they will gain any significant PC market share. µ

7 is 11 gigabytes that you don't need.

All that most people use of it would fit comfortably in 200M. But for wasting disk space, layers of unnecessary API, and complexity piled atop rickety, M$ is still the leader. The amazing thing is that they still get people to pay for what's now free with Linux.

By the way, 7 is really XP with a face lift, nowhere near so different as the change from Win9x shell atop single-tasking DOS. Wish you'd quit marketing for M$ by implying that 7 is different. -- Well, it IS deliberately incompatible in its driver models, but that's the same old M$ crime of forcing change where none is needed.

635 Million PCs?

There's no way 635 million PCs will ship in 2011 unless you count ARMed devices and they certainly aren't shipping "7".

About 66% of PCs are shipping with "7". Ask M$. They say 400 million "7" licences have been shipped since October 2009, about 1.75 years. In that time about 350 million X 1.75 PCs have shipped, 612.5 million. 66% is a lot less than 94% of PCs shipped.

The real news is what else is shipping instead of "7". It's MacOS, GNU/Linux, Meego, and noOS.

Linux

First thing's first: "The means the end of Windows XP".

Nice one Inq really professional writing there, to the editor nice one catching that before it went out.

@Bas

The majority of users who use Linux are people who know what they're doing, and if you know what you are doing then you can avoid viruses and spyware in windows which kind of negates the point of moving to Linux - unless of course you don't know what you're doing in which cases good luck with Linux.

windows 7

windows 7 is excellent. Fast, stable, mostly intuitive, lots of applications available, lots of driver and device support, still supports alot of legacy software. Perfect, no. But look at the trade off's you have to make to use Mac OSX, Ubuntu, WebOS, Chrome, etc.

Windows 7 will stay where it's at in the laptop/desktop market.

There's lots of people who only use facebook and a web browser, who would actually fine with any of these OS's, but the only one they know about is Windows and Mac OS X.

Nah, moved to Ubuntu :-)

I see more and more people moving to Ubuntu because Windows still suffers from Spyware and Virus crap. Many people see that Linux is a lot faster and free from link that can infect your system and nothing will stop them. IE and Windows is a deadly combination for any PC.
Linux has become more friendly then Windows and a lot faster too.
Can't beat that, and certainly the price it costs.
Windows is a dead end, it's too dangerous and expensive to keep running.
Just a matter of time before people are sick of it.

And for the Linux bashers, you should really try Linux with KDE or Gnome and be amazed how far it has come these days.
