A BRITISH TEENAGE GIRL is the world's best Excel spreadsheet user, and has been crowned 'Microsoft Excel world champion'.
This sort of thing is news to us, as foolishly we thought that teenage girls were more concerned with boy bands, like Aha, Depeche Mode and Take This. It seems we were wrong and actually building spreadsheets and working in Microsoft Office are the hottest things around. Or, if you prefer, 'Spreadsheets are wicked, yeah'.
The Telegraph news web site is reporting that Rebecca Rickwood, 15, from Cambridgeshire, won the competition by being the best user of Excel 2007 among some 228,000 international entries.
We are assuming, nay hoping, that the teen's entry was something led through Rickwood's school, but who knows? The world is a very funny place.
Congratulations to young Rickwood though, who topped the group of 79 finalists in San Diego this week, and was very modest in her acceptance of the award and $5,000 prize.
"It's amazing. I didn't think I'd win it," she said according to the Telegraph. "First we had to take a qualifying exam which I took back in about October. Then at the end of June we got the phone call saying I'd got the best score in the UK so I was coming to San Diego for the world championships."
Rickwood's mother is a Microsoft trainer at the school. µ

No one who works for me comes close to my excel skills, so I'd really like to make contact with Rebecca to find out if she'd like a job when she leaves school!
Do the people who have commented on this article not understand irony? Just in case you don´t have a dictionary, it is similar to bronzy and goldy :)
Who the hell is Take This? Was this article written by me Grandad? I think you mean
Take That!
Aren't the Depeche Mode Guys like, 45+ years old?
More like Gramps Band than Boy band.
No dis on the 'Mode, just sayin'.
So she's the best of the people willing (and able) to go to the US, rather than the best of the world per se.
I may sound snide but I know of quite a few people that would not travel there, meaning there is a percentage of the world population, and those would obviously not be able to compete if they had excel skills.
Not that we can't conclude she might well be the best anyway though.
At the risk of sounding like a big girl's blouse, Depeche Mode are not just a boy band!
