Mobiles to support 3D gesture input and multi-player by 2016, says ARM

Chip designer ARM predicts Xbox Kinect-like technology on phones

MOBILE DEVICES will support multi-player online gaming and 3D gesture input just like Microsoft's Kinect technology for the Xbox, chip designer ARM has predicted.

ARM reckons that mobile devices based on its chips will be on a par with PCs within a few years, offering similar processor and graphics performance capabilities.

The details can be seen in an interview over at our sister IT news web site V3.co.uk. µ

distant future

Hmm, so to operate your phone you'd have to be at least 11 feet away from it then.
That's going to be interesting to watch :)
I wonder if people will evolve very long arms.

They already support multiplayer

ARM devices already support multiplayer, multiplatform online games. It's just that few games take advantage of it.

Attack of the SOC Fusion

AMD started down this path a few years ago, but only recently produced products such as Fusion. Arm has an advantage by already being low power and not being tied to x86 compatibility. The Nvidia implementations with GPU threaten most competitors. Most people don't care what is under the hood as long as it performs. With the increasing base of software, ARM could become the personal CPU and other architectures relegated to PC compatible and server roles, but watch out, ARM has many tricks left.
