WORKERS IN THE UK are far more likely to steal or abuse their office based data, according to a report from a firm with a vested interest in this sort of thing.
In the study, we use the term 'study' loosely, data security firm Sailpoint found that over half of all the UK employees it spoke to - presumably not just those that are in its offices - were willing to abuse data when given the chance.
The firm said that this was higher than the response rates in the US and Australia where just over five per cent and four per cent, respectively, said that they would do the same.
In the UK though, where we recommend that no one leaves their phone on their desk at lunchtime, around 48 per cent of respondents would look at either salary information or performance reviews.
Sailpoint co-founder and VP of marketing Jackie Gilbert told our sister IT news web site V3.co.uk that the high numbers could represent increased dissatisfaction.
"What makes this threat is really influenced by the erosion of company loyalty," Gilbert said - presumably while wearing a Sailpoint baseball cap and tee shirt.
"Clearly [lack of] employee loyalty and hard times economically could really cause the kind of answers that you are seeing." µ

'Employee loyalty' is the same sort of bullshit as 'team member' and 'professionalism'. It's all just crap to make employees more diligent. In the end, virtually all employers will 'let you go' if it suits them.
Companies have only two obligations: to operate within the law of the land and to serve their shareholders.
Each employee has just one overriding responsibility: to look after the best interest of themselves and their nearest and dearest. If the best way to do that is to play the company game then so be it: we can fake that :-)
Off the cuff I think that any disparity with the US and many other countries is caused by the population of those not considering their abuse as being abuse.
So this speaks for the UK population that half at least knows and admits it's really not nice, even when still doing it.
