LINUX FOUNDER Linus Torvalds has released the Linux 3.0 kernel.
Earlier this week Torvalds announced that the release of the Linux 3.0 kernel would be delayed. The delay was due to an obscure bug that was thought to be fixed, but the patch needed further testing to meet quality control standards. It seems that testing didn't take too long and in the early hours today the source for the Linux 3.0 kernel appeared on the main Linux kernel folder at kernel.org.
Soon after, Torvalds posted an update on his Google+ account saying, "[Linux] 3.0 pushed out."
Although the Linux 3.0 kernel is essentially just a rebadge of Linux 2.6.40, there is a long list of updates. Given that Linux 3.0 is a major version number increment, it will be interesting to see how long popular Linux distributions will take to adopt it.
For now though, Linux users can download the Linux 3.0 source code (FTP) and compile it for themselves. µ

I'm amazed no one has commented on the polite dig at Mr. Torvalds.
The pain, the pain!!! I LIKE, TOTALLY, NEED this new kernel, but Mom said she'd kick me out of her basement the next time I download Linux!!!What should I do???
does SystemRescueCD count as "popular", because I'd put a modest amount of money on that getting it, at least as an option - unless it already has and I'm misreading.
As of 15th July '11:
"Standard kernels: added recent fedora patches to linux-2.6.38.8 (rescuecd + rescue64)
"Alternative kernels: updated sources to linux-2.6.39.3 (altker32 + altker64)"
Isn't there something about the odd numbers being beta editions of the even numbers?
Of course you don't run SRCD all the time - probably. It isn't what it's for.
