Apple launches OS X Lion with features from Windows 3.1

Cupertino's photocopiers are slower than Redmond's
Thu Jul 21 2011, 17:50

TWENTY SIX YEARS AGO Microsoft launched a GUI for its disk operating system (DOS) called Windows. Now, more than a quarter of a century later, Cupertino's photocopiers have finally warmed up, allowing the company to copy this Microsoft feature in its Lion-themed OS. We were playing with our Android phones during the keynote, so we weren't listening closely, but we're sure Jobs called this feature "magical" and "life changing" and, although we were playing our free copy of Angry Birds, we got the distinct impression that Jobs also implied it will get you laid.

OS X Lion also adds some other groundbreaking features, like disabling support for apps coded for the PowerPC Macs of old and introducing a new scrolling system that makes no sense at all. The company has also 86'd Front Row, leaving some users yearning for a Windows Media Centre PC. This comes at a time when professional video editors are all wondering why their new version of Final Cut Pro can no longer access the cinematic projects that they've toiled over for months or years.

Additional innovative features in Apple's Mac OS X 10.7 Lion include an ability to see all your apps in one place, something Microsoft did decades ago with Program Manager, and later, the Start menu. Apple also now has something called "Mission Control", which it's so very proud of, and it allows you to access running programs, much like Task Manager under Windows, and see open documents and web pages.

Apple has also given sharing files a makeover. Now, it's possible to share documents with other Apple users through something called Air Drop. To do this, find someone else in your vicinity, then drop that file called "naked fun times and happylulz" onto their name. Soon, they'll have your .sit file with that Macdefender payload and your credit card information will propagate widely. Hurrah!

Apple has also put the Mac App Store in a new, prominent position. This is great for Apple, because it has finally managed to con users into accepting that it controls all app stores they will ever use. This means it can deny access to apps it doesn't approve of whilst creaming off a juicy 30 per cent cut of the rest for itself. It's inspired marketing by total control. And what's more, when it introduces a system that locks software apps to one computer, no one will be able to do anything about it.

Apple's Mac OS X Lion costs £20.99 and is available via the Mac store. Apple also intends to make it available for sale to its fanbois on USB sticks, which is a feature Microsoft pioneered decades ago.

Apple is catching up with Mac OS X though, however slowly. µ

Yes, probably the worst article ever written

I have never owned a Mac...but yeah...it isn't journalism, parody, or even funny, if you just make an asinine claim, and then fail to ever address it again. You have to find at least a tiny pearl of truth which rings true, or at least argue your point in a funny way.

Hey view files in one place, that's like program manager!! Um....yeah...what a zinger. HI larious

Great Article

tried to use macbook couple of times. that thing with resizing windows and dragging mouse across the screen requires one to be a sniper, made me so upset i almost ruined the device, what a shame so many lazy bones are actually using this crap and appear to be happy (LOL)lazy because if you use windows and learn, you yourself get better each day. the sooner the better, now it's formatted into awesome windows 7 and i keep loving it more for it's beauty and performance.oh and i have ubuntu on second partition with fully enabled compiz (copied from lion osx probably).

@Brent

OSX Lion is 20.99. Seeing as how Apple charge twice as much, does that mean Windows 7 can be had 10.49 now? Cool! Oh, no wait, the cheapest version I could find was 50 quid, and that was one of the gimped "home premium" version. And that was for the upgrade from starter package. The full package was 80 quid.

Congradulations

I've never seen so many acolytes of the Church of Jobs on one page before. There is one thing you can always be sure of if you write an article criticizing the fruity bunch and that is that the mindless Apple Jacks will be out in force defending why spending twice as much money for a lesser product makes them cooler and smarter...status minded pinheads are an ugly thing to witness. Keep up with the good work and ignore the mindless drivel slathering out of their mouths!!

One Sided Journalism

Wow, one sided journalism, nice work. Don’t bother mentioning the pile of junk Microsoft has been selling for the past 25 years. Why do you even bother sitting in front of a Mac? Go back to the Apple store, return the Mac and explain to them that you’d rather be using Microsoft’s ancient DLL and registry based sorry excuse for an operating system.

Lion user responds

I tend to be an early adopter on most things and Lion was no exception. I admittedly have had a few problems, but as someone who has been an Apple user for longer than the apparent lifetime of the writer of this blog, I knew how to handle them. It took about 2 hours to take care of the hiccups and get used to the changes and I'm back to operating normally.

For the record, I've been using Macs daily since 1997, which is about 14 years, so draw your conclusions on my above comment from there. I've used Windows as well since 3.1 and know where the differences and benefits lie of each OS.

When you get done with puberty and learn how to use all of the computers and operating systems on which you comment and compare, get back to me.

Decades? (again)

Windows XP came out in October 2001 apparently so not quite a decade, and I don't think they were releasing it on USB stick then - how many PCs could boot from a USB device? There are articles breathlessly explaining how to do it, from 2005.

According to Wikipedia, a "USB stick" in the sense of a self-contained USB-connected moduele of Flash memory treated as mass file storage, was first seen in 2000 from IBM, holding 8 megabytes of data. I don't think Windows XP would fit onto that?

Overall, however, the article is cynical, sarcastic, deliberately exaggerated, and pretty funny, as well as a useful antidote to the uncritical delight with which a mere operating system service pack release is being received.

I'm sure Lion is a good effort, but I'm not sure it's worth the price. And the time must come soon where developer access to app stores or other reserved channels of software distribution is tReated as a free speech issue. And "free" as in "not obliged to give Apple/Microsoft/Linus Torvalds a big slice of any money you make", too.

Innovation where art tho?

Hahahaha nice article. A 1/4 of a century to catch up to Windows 3.1, for multi-point window resizing eh? Not much longer than it took them to introduce copy and paste on their "phones". Sorry, couldn't resist.

Still, there will always be people who will pay more for decidedly average hardware, with non-standard HDD connectors, and a dated looking GUI. After all their ad's are so cool, with the silouettes and "hip" music. lol. And the cases look soooooo pretty.

Sorry Mr Jobs, I don't think I want to live in your ecosystem. I don't like dictatorships. I prefer the democracy that is Windows/Linux/WP7/Android.

Looks like Mr Jobs enjoys the freedom of Windows too. After all, his data centres, and cloud systems all run on Microsoft Azure and Windows server. I guess there are some things Apple are unable to immitate

Each to their own though. lol.

Its 2011 Gordon, that means a decade ago was 2001. Pretty sure this deature existed with Windows XP.

Vista

As an Apple and Mac fan I can tell you for a fact "Lion is Apple's Vista". Full of bugs, dumb ideas and upgrade only with Apple benefiting. I have a less than a year old Dual 6 core Zeon Mac Pro with 32mb ram 250mb SSD & 1tb backup/storage drive. Now I have a $6000.00 mac that has crashed twice in one day after "upgrading" to lion. Office will no longer run correctly, Photoshop is even worse. The scroll setup makes NO sence. This upgrade was all about pushing sales thru the APP-store not about a better Mac, because this is not. I'm glad I backed up Snow Leopard because I'm going back. Mac/Apple shame on you.

USB sticks?

Apparently Apple's idea to distribute a version of Lion on a USB stick is something Microsoft were doing decades ago.

That's a hell of a feat seeing USB drives didn't exist back then.

A Mac Article Written by a Ill Informed PC User

I'll make this short and sweet, and pretty straight forward with irrefutable equation signs and everything for this PC user. I'll match features of Win7 PC to OS X that have a similar goal and feel.

Scrolling system = iOS. Pick up an iPhone and try it out. I switched mine back to the original because I use Linux quite a bit as well. You can turn it off with a simple click!

Mission control != Task Manager
Activity Monitor = Task Manager

Why Mission control? : Multitouch integration that doesn't require you sifting through a list of programs you don't care about.

Launchpad != Program Manager
Applications = Program Manager

Why Launch Pad? : Multitouch integration that doesn't require you sifting through a list of programs you don't care about.

AirDrop: Encrypted peer-to-peer file transfer sandboxed application, and requires the other computer transferring data to be within 30 feet, and both computers must approve the transfer.

Mac App Store: You're right, 'tis a shame to have a good supply of Macintosh apps consolidated in one place. I always love browsing the web for software, questioning whether the program I'm about to install is malicious. The App Store is also not the only place to find Apps, it just is A place. That way, I can install all my favorite open sourced linux tools in UNIX platform!

USB Sticks: Really? This is an argument of yours? I think introducing a OS distributed entirely over the internet is a revolutionary way to attain the software, without having to create physical media that will sit on your shelves for years.

I can't say anything about Windows Media Center since I never used it, but I never used front row either: VLC.

In short, please do not write meaningless articles such as this unless you have considerable experience with the device you're writing about. Clearly, you haven't even opened up any OS X Utility folders or System Preferences in quite some time.

Sure people can relate to some of the things on a Mac to its copy i.e. Windows.

What Apple achieves is finesse in its products that MS can never achieve with its task manager or all programs

Getting Laid?

Well, if you are naive enough to think you were going to get laid, then you are naive enough to believe in microsloth.

Apple is faster, better, superior and overall just puts windows to shame.

Never ever looked back with regret at migrating away from microsloth products. That was one happy happy day.

Mr Ian is on payroll from Msoft

I think Mr Ian is secret spy planted to write against Apple without considering the fair grounds. Apple products are far more expensive than other devices but they offer peace of mind and good value for money. Like the osx is much more superior than windows. Macs rarely crash and you don't need expensive anti virus for your computer.

Blimey.

If I understand correctly, this article is "bait". Daily Mail recently paraded that MailOnline had record hits. The reason for this is because they deliberately use sensationalist, offensive, grossly biased and opinionated remarks to generate page hits. This is precisely why IstyOsty exists, to cripple this baiting for pageviews method that now appears to be spreading. The only thing missing from the Inquirer is the celebrity gossip and their own version of good ol' "DAILY MAIL REPORTER".

I'm going to be a bastard, and link to a proper review of features, delivered by a real tech outlet that leave no stone unturned and work for their page hits rather than bait for them: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars

Wosrt.Inquirer.Article.Ever

If you want a media center for your mac, try XBMC. Front row is as outdated and lacking support for new formats as Windows Media Center, it's just that apple has realized that and canned it as not to embarrass themselves any further (microsoft is still embarrasing themselves with WMC).

People who edit videos for a living should have switched to Sony Vegas long time ago. Apple is a consumer focused company.

The rest of the article: What a terrible core dump of sillines...

Moronic Flamebait

It's quite obvious you are a drooling Microsoft toadie, incapable of objective evaluation, but even with your resultant mental deficiency, comparing Mission Control to Task Manager as equal features is unexpectedly moronic.

Also, your first paragraph makes no sense. You talk about Apple copying some "feature" from Microsoft, but you don't bother to say what that is.

Perhaps one could interpret it to mean that Apple finally added a GUI to their "disk operating system", but that would make even less sense since Mac was the first mainstream graphical OS way back in 1984, long before Microsoft warmed up their photocopies to rip it off.

All you Applites who think this article is stupid, guess what, it's ACCURATE. Those 250 "amazing, groundbreaking" features included with the new version of OSX are a total, absolute, moronic joke.
Just a few examples:

1. The Mac can now restore! Wow, Windows can't (no, it can Hibernate, Sleep, and Stand by).
2. Holy moly...Macs can now do threaded conversations in mail just like EVERY SINGLE OTHER MAIL PROGRAM AVAILABLE!
3. Multiple languages support. *slaps forehead*
4. Birthdays -- WITHOUT YEARS!! Oh my God, where do I sign up?!
5. Ability to cancel file transfer - well smack me silly. Amazing!

Don't believe me? Read for yourselves, suckers: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

Oh...and does Apple mention that the new update busts almost all Adobe applications? No? Well, at least you can use Final Cut Pro to edit your...oh...erm, never mind.

Apple is a joke. Applites are morons if they think this is anything OTHER than catching up to the rest of the world. Jeezus...keep paying Jobs, he obviously doesn't have enough of your money yet. Keep sucking on that Apple teat.
