Ofcom wants better value broadband

Don’t we all
Wed Jul 20 2011, 09:40

UK TELECOMS WATCHDOG Ofcom has decided to make BT cut wholesale broadband prices, giving UK citizens better broadband and a bit more cash in their pockets.

That's the idea at least. Any savings will probably be spent on mousemats and logo'd pens around ISP offices, but then, that might be just us being cynical.

In the world of the press release however, the price reductions will be some 12 per cent below inflation and will apply to services provided via BT.

The price cuts will increase competition, said Ofcom, as ISPs other than BT will be able to charge more competetive rates to their users, particularly we imagine, those that live in barns in the most rural parts of the UK.

Quality of connections should also be improved, Ofcom said, as ISPs will be able to allocate more bandwidth per customer.

The changes will come into force next month. µ
