BEANCOUTERS at the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) have predicted growth of 157 per cent in tablet shipments to over 26.5 million units in the US.

This growth when put into money terms forecasts $14bn in overall shipment revenues for the industry. Sales of connected devices are set to rake in over $190bn, which is $4bn more than CEA anticipated in January.

Gary Shapiro, CEO at CEA said, "Newer, innovative product categories, like tablets, not only meet consumer demand but also help bolster our industry and strengthen the overall American economy."

Furthermore, CEA projects even higher growth for the industry in 2012, with revenue reaching an all-time high of $197bn. On a global scale the International Data Corporation (IDC) recently forecast total shipments of 53.5 million units for tablets in 2011.

On the smartphone side, CEA predicts that sales of the little gadgets we just can't do without will grow 45 per cent. CEA said smartphones will "continue to be the primary revenue driver for the industry", bringing in $23bn in revenue.

CEA also looks for E-readers to do well in 2011, touting a doubling of sales this year resulting in revenue of $1.8bn. µ

Hmmm...

Perhaps this is why the idol rich don't want a tax increase- So they can buy loads of fondle slabs? I don't have one and am in no rush to get one any time soon. I have a Smartphone, a laptop, and a desktop. I don't need a Tablet. Those toys are for the idol rich.

And you said that the iPad would tank

It is funny but not that long ago I read here at the Inq how the iPad would tank and that tablets do not have future!. Everyone+dog has now a tablet (vendors, I mean)... They only have to implement a usable on-screen keyboard...

Great! And the tablet *I* wanted ...

...was the successor to the HP TM2 convertible Tablet PC. But then it turns out HP is canning their Tablet PC line and ramping up their silly fingerpaint slates!!
Argh!!!
