THE PHONE HACKING SCANDAL at now defunct Sunday tabloid rag News of the World (NOTW) has earned the attention of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following rumours that News Corporation hacked phones relative to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

According to Bloomerg the FBI is investigating claims that families of 9/11 victims were hacked, much like missing children, grieving families, members of Parliament, the British royal family, their friends and just about anyone else you could think of.

The FBI was asked to pick up the investigation by Peter King, the Republican chairman of the US House Committee on Homeland Security.

Today Rebekah Brooks, the only newspaper editor on the planet that apparently did not know what her reporters were doing, resigned from her post as CEO of News International. Brooks sat behind the editor's desk at NOTW when the worst of the phone hacking is thought to have been perpetrated.

Although her resignation has been accepted, many had thought that Brooks was being shielded by Rupert Murdoch, who had steadfastly supported her, if not his 168 year old newspaper, throughout the scandal.

"We're aware of certain allegations pertaining to a possible hacking by News Corp. personnel and we're looking into those charges," said Jim Margolin, a spokesman for the FBI New York office. µ
