US coppers are searching Facebook

Search warrants issued for people lookups
Wed Jul 13 2011, 08:50

US POLICE are being granted warrants to search user accounts on Facebook, according to a report at Reuters.

The news agency reports that law enforcement agencies are obtaining search warrants and entering user accounts without the individuals' knowledge or consent.

At least two dozen search warrants have been awarded, it explained, and the majority of these asked for what was called a "laundry list of personal data". This, Reuters learned, includes messages, status updates, friend requests, videos and photos, and, interestingly, "rejected friend requests".

Reuters suggested that Facebook makes the process easy by offering investigators a user's "Neoprint" and "Photoprint", which it said was a very detailed dump of information. Although this appears to be sitting at its offices waiting for anyone that asks for it, Reuters said that the information was not available to users themselves.

The number of searches seems to be rising, and the article reports that eleven warrants have been granted since the start of this year, more than double the number that were seen in 2010. µ

@LOL

@Bastiat's Ghost: Why is it that a certain ethnic group wield so much power in the USA government.Ever look and read that one ethnic group controls most of the media in North America. Most people have to fight to get their foot in the door, this ethnic group has doors open for them before they stand in front of it. They have the CIA,FBI,NSA,US Politicians all working on their behalf.This remark has nothing to do with being Paranoid,its a fact.

LOL?

The CIA helped BUILD Facebook for Chrissakes. I'm not really worried about cops getting WARRANTS and actually doing legitimate searches. Meanwhile the CIA/NSA just open up their little backdoor to Facebook and pull down whatever data they want as a matter of routine.

Old saying

There is a now old saying that if you don't want something seen don't put it on the internet. This extends to sapposedly private info cause it's been common practice for years for everyone to sell some amount of user data to someone else. I can guarantee you Facebook has been selling info to marketing groups since before day one, that said that's the norm so it's basically harmless depending on the data.

That all said I would hardly call 11 warrants in 6 1/2 months a huge invasion of privacy, especially since facebook has the better part of a billion active accounts. For all any of us know they pulled that info on pedophiles who are still on parole and suspected of violating it. Although I do agree that it's strange and wrong that cops can have access to these "prints" but the actual user doesn't.

Paranoid

People thought I was Paranoid because I haven't signed up to Facebook. Look who's getting info on you Police, FBI, Lawyers, Insurance companies etc etc. Biggest repository of info on the net and all your personal connections. The KGB, Stazi, FBI etc couldn't of had it this easy. If the cops phoned you up and asked you to down to the station and wanted all this info on you without laying a charge, I'm sure you would be phoning a lawyer. People now a days can't see past their nose. Get caught up in the hype. Police don't even have to bring you down to take a mug shot, I'm sure someone has uploaded a pic of you and tagged it. Here we are complaining about government intrusion into our lives and here we have all these sheep handing it over with nary a thought. Well people you reap what you sow.
