Android is cementing its smartphone lead
SMARTPHONE USERS are increasingly embracing the Android operating system, giving it 38 per cent of the US market.
Market watcher Comscore reports that Android has increased its lead over the last three months, and is taking handset manufacturers along with it. So, for example Samsung, which makes the Galaxy handset, had almost a quarter of US smartphone marketshare.
Around eight million people were using smartphones during the period, an increase of over 11 per cent against the previous quarter. Google's Android is at the top with 38.1 per cent of the market, and a five per cent quarterly gain, and Apple is in second place with a 1.4 per cent increase and 26.6 per cent of the market.
RIM, which makes the popular Blackberry device, is in third place with just under 25 per cent, while Microsoft has a 5.8 per cent share and Palm has 2.4 per cent.
RIM has had a mixed year and despite releasing the interesting Playbook tablet it has been criticised for releasing products early and wasting other opportunities, while Microsoft will no doubt hope to increase its meagre share of the US smartphone market thanks to its Nokia partnership and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango updates. µ

apple offers 1 design at a fairly high price. it's nice, and in many ways still the best (battery life in particular).
But if you want a big screen, a keyboard, a higher res screen, a faster processor, something thinner, something lighter, something less expensive, etc, etc there's an android option that will match.
Apple might need more form factors/price points like they do with the ipod.
Once the masses recognize that the Micr0$uck$ LoseDoze Fone7 can install the internet onto a cell phone and that the users can browse the web and point and click and cut and paste and multitask and do all of the things that so DIFFICULT if not IMPOSSIBLE to do with any other O/S, EVERY PHONE will run the LoseDoze O/S!
