Nokia cuts the prices of its smartphones

Insists it's all part of business
Wed Jul 06 2011, 11:45

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia is going to cut the price of its handsets by up to 15 per cent, which could cause a price war.

The mobile phone giant is planning to drop the prices of its flagship devices such as the N8, C7 and E6. The E6 is one of the smartphones Nokia launched most recently.

It seems that Nokia is taking this step to try to increase sales of its struggling smartphones. This could have an affect across the smartphone market causing rival vendors to fall into a price war.

Nokia insists there is no problem and told The INQUIRER, "Price changes are part of our normal, ongoing business and from time to time we may adjust prices for specific products in specific locations. All business as usual."

An analyst at Gartner told us, "Nokia needs to keep users from going to other platforms and the combination of attractive prices and good hardware features such as cameras and free turn by turn navigation still offer a good option for many mass market consumers."

"The impact on the smartphone market is for higher growth and price pressure on the low end Android offering."

The Symbian devices such as the N8 that could get a price cut will be supported by Nokia until 2016 via Accenture. Nokia has a tough job on its hands competing with the likes of Apple and Google with their extremely popular operating systems, IOS and Android.

The Finnish firm has been struggling recently in a number of ways. It has seen its share price fall over the last couple of months and announced various new phones including the Meego based N9, which we're not sure will tip up in the UK.

Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop has dismissed rumours of a buyout and has maintained a positive outlook with each appearance he's made recently. The success or failure of Nokia's upcoming and recently leaked Windows Phone 7 handsets will surely be make or break for the Finnish firm. µ

MS is lethal for Nokia

Palm had the biggest customer base in PDAs and started out well with Tungsten W but they killed their business when they slept with the enemy. HP is now struggling to get their investment back.

Nokia at least has been paid for whoring with Microsoft, but it will kill the Finnish phone maker, all the same. If your OS can't stand on its own feet, then paying a bucket load of cash for someone to install it, will not make it a success. Nokia will be in the market for penicillin soon. MS is toxic.

Make or brake?

I think it's the "Apollo" or Windows Phone 8 in year 2012 which will show people what this deal is all about. Remeber how Apple started with iPhone 3 and how bad Android phones were. Be patient and buy Nokia stock, it's cheap now that Elop the Mole destroyed it's value.

As the X7 demonstrates...

It's fashionable to bash Symbian but you have to go over Symbian Anna with a fine tooth comb to find the UI niggles, which certainly don't outweigh the niggles you can find with WP7, iOS, or Android phones.

They've finally got their act together and this version will be rolled out over the coming months to other handsets like the N8 and E7 which can be accused of having a few flaws.

Shame Elop thrashed around like a bull in a China shop, in the end they got there without him needing to do that. His blunding about just damaged Nokia's stock value and repuation and an OS that just needed a facelift whilst others are still working on sorting out battery life, call quality, reception, tethering, and all the other boring stuff.
