Virgin Media denies any need for net neutrality rules

Market is competitive and regulates itself
Wed Jul 06 2011, 09:40

NET NEUTRALITY LAWS are not needed in the UK as the broadband market is competitive enough to ensure that consumers have access to different services from a range of companies, at least it is if you listen to the CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett.

V3.co.uk has been listening to Berkett, who was speaking at the annual Intellect Conference on Tuesday. Berkett said that the US had been forced into protecting net neutrality, but added that the UK does not need such a heavy touch.

We think he really doesn't like the idea of having to maintain equal access for all information and media content providers on the internet without being able to charge some of them - and perhaps Virgin Media's broadband network subscribers too - whatever the traffic will bear, but you can read his views at V3.co.uk in the article linked above and decide for yourself whether you agree with him. µ

Dissemble much, Neil?

Virgin have an incentive to attempt to monopolize content provision. This being the case, they might naturally be expected to oppose net neutrality.

Not implying nothing, just saying.
