Samsung Galaxy Z is not coming to the UK

Exclusive straight from the horse’s mouth

KOREAN ELECTRONICS FIRM Samsung has confirmed that its Galaxy Z smartphone won't be making an appearance in the UK.

On the world wide interweb today there has been some hype and rumour about a cut down version of the Galaxy S II. The phone was announced by mobile operator Three in Sweden.

However, Samsung told The INQUIRER, "There are currently no plans to launch the Galaxy Z in the UK market"

If Samsung changes its mind and does bring the Galaxy Z to Blighty then we'll have a 4.2in display, 1GHz dual-core smartphone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This is almost exactly the same as the Galaxy S II, we hear you cry.

Well, it is, apart from the screen is 0.1in smaller and uses Super Clear LCD technology instead of AMOLED. The camera on the Galaxy Z is also sub par at 5MP compared to the Galaxy S II 8MP camera.

The Galaxy Z is both thicker and heavier than its brother at 9.45mm and 135g. It is cheaper of course at around £400 (3,995 Swedish Krona) compared to the Galaxy S II's price tag of £500.

We don't think Samsung has any reason to bring the Galaxy Z to the UK. It wouldn't make sense to take the focus away from the popular Galaxy S II and Samsung already has a budget version in the form of the Galaxy Ace.

We've also contacted Three in the UK to get its side of the story, but we're still waiting to hear back. µ

I couln't agree more. I have a Sony Cybershot C905, a truly ancient phone by today's standards. The photos it takes are quite impressive for a 'phone' (it's more a camera that can make phone calls). It's certainly not DSLR quality, but not bad for all that.

Having now 'upgraded' to a Blackberry Torch the photos are significantly worse in all respects, and not just because there is slightly fewer Mpixels. Fair enough, RIM don't sell it as a camera.

But I now find myself carrying a proper camera around with me when I'm likely to be taking photos. Whereas in the past I would have taken just the C905 and got reasonable snaps, the occassional phone calls and had just one thing to carry.

A quick bit of Googling would suggest that the Cybershot brand at Sony has dried up. Does that mean that no one is making mobiles with half decent cameras? Does this mean that photography is going the same way as music - lots of it but awful technical quality? Is there a danger that compact digital cameras will disappear, and we'll be forced to carry a DSLR to take a half decent snap? That would be a sorrowful trend indeed.

I don't understand you people

who are supposed to be technically inclined, to argue about the number on MP in the camera as an indication to its
quality. The bigger numbers are good for the mob who doesn't know any better and looks for one simple number to compare - like the wattage of speakers as "whose speaker is the best".

4MP is 2000X2000 pixels. When did you last see video at that resolution? the bad optics and limited dedicated electronics cut the quality down to 640x480 (0.3MP) equivalent stream.

Acceptable Hardware, but unacceptable Support

As an owner of the original Galaxy S Phone (unbranded, not bought from a mobile operator) for about a year now, i can not recommend getting a samsung phone to anybody, because their support for existing customers st^hmells.

While the hardware is fine, Android updates were about a year late, and cannot be installed on the phone unless you own a windows PC (XT/Vista/Win7) on which you need to install their crappy Support program "Kies".

Furthermore, Kies needs a direct internet connection (no proxies or firewall to you, so your machine at work won`t cut it), and the samsung support was unable to tell me which ports I need to forward. According to phone and Email inquiries, it is not possible to download the Image to the phone or PC and install it directly on the machine.

Sorry guys, the Galaxy S is a full-blown Linux machine with half a gig of ram, a GHz CPU, 8 Gigs of Flash and a Wifi Connection to the internet.

If you are not willing to allow the customer to download the image directly to the phone without installing some crappy host program on an unprotected windows PC, then you have lost a customer.

I don't typically care for the latest updates, but the GPS subsystem regularly crashes after a day and requires a reboot to find the satellites again, which I would hope to be updated with a new software version.

Doesn't sound like much of a bargin to me....

1) Somewhat smaller, subpar Screen, on the plus side the LCD Screens have a better Res then the AMOLED Screens though

2) Lower Camera Res? WHY

3) Thicker and Heavier? This isn't instantly a bad thing.

But what's an extra £100.00 Squid why not just get the real thing?
