Skype launches Android update to add video calls

VOICE OVER IP SERVICE Skype launched an update to its Android app that includes video calling.

Skype for Android 2.0 will allow free video calls between Android users and users of Skype on any other devices, including the Iphone, Mac, PC or a smart TV, not including any potential charges for using 3G or 4G service, of course.

Skype contacts can even be synched with the contacts in your phone to give a popup option for instant video calls without having to enter Skype at all, which is a particularly handy feature.

Another element to the video calls is the ability to use either the front or back cameras. For example, you can display your face initially while you greet the person on the other end of the line and then switch to the second camera to show them a local sight you want to share. Of course, this obviously requires that there are two cameras built into your phone.

The Skype interface has also received a makeover to make it easier to find contacts, change your profile and check your Skype balance. It even adds a "mood" box, which you can use to inform people that you're likely to snap at them if they call you soon.

Neil Stevens, VP and GM of products and marketing at Skype said that the company is committed to bringing video calling to as many platforms as possible. Last December it added the feature for the Iphone.

However, not all Android phones will support video calling initially. The list currently includes only the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro, and Google's Nexus S. Skype hinted that it will add more phones, but it looks like older phones might have to make do with voice calls and text chat.
