ACCORDING TO PENETRATION TESTERS at Symantec mobile operating system security is far superior to PC protection.
Symantec, in a report called "A Window into Mobile Device Security: Examining the security approaches employed in Apple's iOS and Google's Android" (PDF), has analysed the mobile operating system software and found the latter to be lacking, though not by much.
The firm found that while the mobile software releases did have some security protections, these 'provisions' were not secure enough to protect sensitive data, such as for example work-related documents.
"Today's mobile devices are a mixed bag when it comes to security," said Carey Nachenberg, Symantec fellow and chief architect, Symantec Security Technology and Response.
"While more secure than traditional PCs, these platforms are still vulnerable to many traditional attacks. Moreover, enterprise employees are increasingly using unmanaged, personal devices to access sensitive enterprise resources, and then connecting these devices to 3rd-party services outside of the governance of the enterprise, potentially exposing key assets to attackers."
Both the Android and IOS offer 'improved security' over desktop operating systems, according to the security firm, but both are open to what it saw as "existing categories of attacks".
IOS was the slightly better performer when it came with dealing with traditional malware, according to Symantec, thanks to its 'rigorous' application certification process. Symantec added that this made it easier to track down software authors and 'weed out' attackers.
Google, meanwhile, has a less rigorous certification model, according to the security firm, which means that any developer can create and release applications unchecked.
Symantec saw jailbroken devices as particularly ripe for attack, and it added that they are attractive targets and "every bit as vulnerable as traditional PCs". µ
That made me laugh, Linux more secure than Windows. As if.
They facts are that Linux has many times more vulnerabilties, and is far more likely to be remotely exploited.

@mike and anyone else who thinks their OS is safer than any other out there.
Nothing is safer than Microsoft out of the box. That's not fanboism that's reality but that's also where it ends.
Any OS is only as safe as the user/admin behind it. Linux people talk out their behind about security but generally those people have taken a large amount of time to secure their machine it didn't come out of the box that way and its still dependent upon them acting accordingly on the machine. If Linux people actually took the time to secure Windows as well as they secure their Linux box they would learn it takes half the time and is just as secure providing they arent doing dumb things. As I said the OS is only as secure as the user/admin behind it and no more.
Allow every application in android to access your information and expect bad things to happen that's not the OS its the user that created the problem.
Symantec would have you believe if you dont have their products installed the world is too dangerous to go anywhere.
I certainly feel you do more damage to your machine by installing anything by Symantec than if you went with a free product. Certainly lost more machines to just uninstalling a Symantec product to know how poor their products have become.
And Symantec knows they are becoming insignificant to just about anyone else. So any time someone is listening Symantec is running off at the mouth about Microsoft products. Either trying to scare up sales or just to bad mouth Microsoft. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft is pushing them out of their product market because of Symantec's big mouth and arrogance.
Ghost is dead.
Their AV products other than base Server OS are a disaster I would challenge that some free AV is just as good if not better.
Their archive/compliance products are on the end of life with products like Exchange 2010.
For Sharepoint just stay away from anything Symantec. On the desktop its a dog and uninstalls a mess and again free is on par with thier products.
They still make doctor tools when there are free products like CCleaner that perform as good or better.
I would say a lot of the free products have eaten away at Symantec's business model and Symantec has killed many of their own products over time but Symantec wants to blame Microsoft for their poor direction its just easier than accepting blame.
What do iOS and Android have in common?
The author forgot to mention that this only applies to PCs running Microsoft Windows.
My PC (which uses Ubuntu) is much more secure than my Android cell phone.
