CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia has taken the lid off its high-end Geforce GTX570M and GTX580M GPUs aimed at gaming laptops.
Nvidia launched its desktop Geforce GTX580 part late last year, with savvy punters realising that it isn't much of an upgrade from the previous generation Geforce GTX480. The 40nm Geforce GTX580M isn't quite the same chip as its desktop counterpart, having 384 cores clocked at 1240MHz and 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 1500MHz.
For Nvidia, the Geforce GTX580M offers it another chance to show off features such as its 3D Vision, PhysX and SLI features, with the firm claiming that SLI can deliver close to 2X performance gains in some games. Of course that's not particularly good for battery life so Nvidia spent a good part of its announcement outlining how Optimus, it's GPU switching technology, will enable up to five hours of battery life.
As for which laptops will carry a dual Geforce GTX580M, Nvidia would only announce Alienware's M18X and Clevo's P270MM, which both have an 18.4in screen, an Intel Sandy Bridge chip, and presumably a weight that puts them in the desknote category. Nvidia did say that the original design manufacturer Clevo will be producing non-SLI versions for firms to re-badge, including the P170HM3 which has a 17.3in display and supports Nvidia's 3D Vision technology.
Nvidia's Geforce GTX570M is a cut down version of the Geforce GTX580M chip, featuring 336 cores running at 1150MHz. 1.5GB or 3GB of GDDR5 frame buffers will be available running at up to 1500MHz. Nvidia said that the launch laptop for the Geforce GTX570M will be MSI's GT780R, which features a 17.3in screen and an Intel Sandy Bridge CPU.
Interestingly Nvidia admitted that its Optimus technology is not compatible with 3D Vision. Mark Aevermann, product manager of mobile products at Nvidia said the incompatibility was due to "a technical reason with the design", adding that it is something that Nvidia is working to solve.
Nvidia said that laptops based on the Geforce GTX570M and Geforce GTX580M GPUs will be available "within weeks". µ
