HTC brings its Evo 3D smartphone to the UK

A glasses free 3D phone to rival LG
Mon Jun 27 2011, 13:00

TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC has announced it will bring its Evo 3D smartphone that has glasses free 3D technology to the UK next month .

The '3D Multimedia Superphone' is already available across the pond in America and HTC has finally delighted us with news that it will be coming to Blighty next month.

Via its Facebook page, HTC said, "We're happy to announce that our first 3D superphone, the HTC EVO 3D, is coming to Europe. It will be hitting UK shelves from July!"

The Evo 3D is HTC's first glasses free 3D handset and it will rival LG's Optimus 3D, which is also due to be available soon. At its heart is a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 1GB of internal storage.

The 'superphone' has a large 4.3in Super LCD touchscreen display with 540x960 resolution. It uses parallax barrier technology to enable viewing a 3D image without accompanying glasses, in the same way the Nintendo 3DS and LG Optimus 3D do.

3D doesn't end with just viewing as the phone has dual 5MP rear cameras with an LED flash so you can take 2D or 3D pictures and video. The Evo 3D also has a 1.3MP front facing camera.

As you would expect the handset runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC's Sense overlay, which for the Evo 3D includes an active lock screen, 3D menus and 3D weather animations.

The handset will come with WiFi, Bluetooth, DLNA and a microUSB port. It isn't the thinnest of phones at 12.5mm and it weighs 170g, which is a bit more than the Sensation's 148g.

We're not sure how much the Evo 3D will cost when it comes out but to give you some idea the recently launched HTC Sensation costs about £500 and the LG Optimus 3D costs around £450.

A lot of the response on Facebook has been positive and one user said, "Well iv now seen Wht my upgrade is going to be", but other users are still just wanting to know when the Gingerbread update will be coming to the Desire, with one writing, "who cares if its 3d.... of course I don't till I get gingerbread on my desire." µ

What 3G Bands will be supported by Europe version ?

What 3G/HSPA+ Bands will be supported on this European model ? Seams that while the Qualcomm MSM8660 chip inside could have a llowed to make this SUPERPHONE as real GLOBAL Phone, HTC may have limited the 3G/HSPA bands to the 2 x European bands only on European model, and to the 2 x US bands only on US model, only the 2G being enabled for full Quad-Bands. Sounds like a real shame ! Please clarify what exactly will be enabled. We want all bands enabled on European phone for 3G/HSPA+ not just half.

The passage of time

"been around for months", by which you mean it was actually released a few days ago.
