Nokia Windows Phone 7 ‘Sea Ray’ gets leaked

Basically the N9 running Mango
Thu Jun 23 2011, 15:34

THANKS TO a naughty Hungarian web site we've been able to get a look at Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone 7 (WP7) handset, codenamed 'Sea Ray'.

The video shows Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop giving a sneak preview of its first WP7 phone. He kindly asks everyone not to film or take pictures, but clearly someone didn't take any notice.

Nokia told The INQUIRER, "It's our policy not to comment on our internal meetings but we can tell you that were excited about the progress were making on Nokia with Windows Phone and look forward to the day that we can share it with the world."

The Sea Ray looks almost identical to the recently announced N9, apart from a couple of small differences. The biggest giveaway is that there is a dedicated camera button on the side, which the N9 doesn't have.

For the eagle-eyed the flash is in a slightly different position, located in-line with the same 8MP Carl Zeiss camera that will be on the N9.

Of course the big difference is that the Sea Ray is running WP7 Mango, not Meego or Symbian. Elop said at the meeting that the phone is "super confidential" and that he didn't want it "getting out into the blogosphere".

If it was an internal meeting we're not sure why a Hungarian web site reporter was there, or if it wasn't, how it got hold of the footage. Nevertheless the Sea Ray, See Ray, C-Ray, however Nokia decides to spell it, will be a N9 looking device with WP7 Mango on it.

There will be also be a number of different WP7 devices to follow it, which are "already working", according to Elop.

There is no sign of Nokia apps such as maps in the Mango operating system, but these presumably will be present when the device ships. µ

It will be interesting...

...if the Meego-run N9 outsells any WP7 Nokia phone with similar hardware specs and design (Sea Ray).

It will be the most emphatic 'F**K YOU' to Elop, Ballmer and Windows 7.

"There is no Plan B.", so claimed Elop. Be careful of what you wish for.

this is exciting?

That is one of most pathetic staged events I have ever seen.

Nokia has some rough days ahead.

It is difficult to get excited about this software.

Some employee leaked it

@Alien

If you look at the video, it is obvious that he was addressing employees via webcast. He just asked the ones preset in the room to turn off their camera, obviously somebody recorded this on his remote computer screen. As he said, there were thousands in audiance. That looks most likely to me.
Phone looks very very CUTE! Nobody had any doubt that Nokia made sexy phones, only let down by their not so impressive software. This WP7 mango device looks slick and snappy. I can't wait to get my hands on this. Am sick of those Asia made cheap droids.. give me a solid europian phone. Good luck Nokia

Re: I choose the N9

"Although I'm a Microsoft shareholder since I think the share is good value, I would choose the N9."

Thanks for that! Nice to hear that value assessment of Microsoft stock, too. I hear Monty Burns is looking to diversify his portfolio slightly and lower his exposure to Imperial Whaling and United Diamonds. And Monsanto.

I choose the N9

Although I'm a Microsoft shareholder since I think the share is good value, I would choose the N9.

All noise and bluster

Oh come on!

This is obviously a "controlled" leak to counter the positive press the N9 received.

There's no way Elop wanted have the "burnt" Meego/Harmattan platform garnering good press coverage - hell, even Engadget approved of it.

The camera is clearly held above head-height. If Elop really didn't want is appearing, he would have told the filmer to stop as the camera would have been clarly visible to him.
