FBI raid takes down web sites

Digitalone seizure impacts the web
Wed Jun 22 2011, 15:01

A RAID BY THE FBI on a web hosting firm has caused problems and downtime amongst its customers.

The raid on hosting firm Digitalone happened late yesterday and saw US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents confiscate some rack servers at the firm. The resulting problems were confirmed on Digitalone customer Pinboards status pages in a number of service updates.

"We have three big servers with one hosting company (DigitalOne). Two of them are online, but our main database server is unreachable. Basically it is cut off from the world because of network problems at our provider," it said.

"A bunch of us who host at DigitalOne are trying to track them down right now for a status update, but have not had any luck. Last I heard from them (Monday night PST) they were fixing a router problem."

This was later updated with more information apparently confirmed by Digitalone. "Just received word from our hosting company that they were raided by the FBI who pulled some racks of equipment. No word on whether our server was among those machines, or whether it is just offline," said a statement posted roughly ten minutes later.

"In the meantime the site is running on a backup server with reduced capabilities."

As of now the Digitalone email offline, and according to a report on the New York times, which has spoken to the head of the company, Sergej Ostroumow, the affected sites could run into the 'tens'. µ

Better Idea?

Hey lulzsec guys, if you get caught tell them you keep your contact in a file on the US defence mainframe system :)
And so the skynet defends itself...

Hackers are not criminals.

Please use the right terms.
Hackers are not criminals.
It's crackers that are.
Hackers are simply people that want to exploit technology to see how far it goes.
Their intent is never to harm others.
If you give a hacker a chip, he will find out what it can do other then the designed purpose.
That is hacking.
People that hurt systems and other people are Crackers, they Crack a system to exploit it regardless the damage they do.
This is NOT what hackers do.
I wish people would use the right terms, as hackers make the internet a much safer place, crackers not.

It's only going to get worse for hackers

It should be no surprise that all law enforcement is going to up the prosecution of hackers. There is no choice quite frankly. Hackers cause all sorts of damage and they will be prosecuted accordingly.
