Mozilla launches its Firefox 5 web browser

Right on time

OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPER Mozilla has released its Firefox 5 web browser that has over 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements.

It is almost exactly a month since Mozilla released the beta version of Firefox 5 and the final version is now available for download. This is exactly when we were expecting Firefox 5 in Mozilla's "rapid development release cycle".

Mozilla said in its blog, "The latest version of Firefox includes more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements that make it easier to discover and use all of the innovative features in Firefox."

The latest version of the popular web browser doesn't bring any major differences in appearance, which was reworked in Firefox 4. Instead the improvements are mostly behind the scenes to improve performance, such as support for CSS animations and the inclusion of WebGL.

The 'Do Not Track' privacy feature that we saw on the beta for Android is now on all Firefox versions, making it the first web browser to support Do Not Track on multiple platforms, according to Mozilla.

Mozilla has also spared some thought for developers with the changes by providing an Add-on Software Development Kit and an Add-on Builder beta.

Mozilla said, "This release adds support for more modern Web technologies that make it easier for developers to build amazing Firefox Add-ons, Web applications and websites."

Firefox 5 has come speeding in the wake of its predecessor Firefox 4, which has had over 200 million downloads across Windows, Mac and Linux.

Mozilla told The INQUIRER, "We're basically dropping the version numbers from our communication since new main releases will appear very fast now. Our engineers are already working on Firefox 6 and 7, which are to be released in 2011, too." µ

Biting

This is a nice example of the current mainstay of internet users, they seem to think that if the GUI is the same the entire core is the same, since the whole concept of software they have is 'what-we-see-plus-magical-fairies-from-microsoft'.

Makes you wonder why coders even bother making stuff available to the retards.

Why the new version again?

This new version system is pointless. I just updated my firefox 4, and it's still firefox 4, only it now says it's firefox 5. Pointless. This should be called firefox 4.1, not 5. Save the major version numbers for major changes. I'd be interested to know what proportion of firefox users are on 3.x, 4.x and 5.x now. Id be surprised if there aren't still more on 3.x than there are on both 4.x and 5 put together. This is another reason I think it's far too soon for a new version number.
If it's because they want to be like chrome(why?), then they should also copy the policy of not bothering to tell anyone when a new version gets pushed out. There's no confusion about which version of Chrome is which because practically nobody knows/cares what the current version is anyway.
