Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread update will arrive in August

Finally sets a date for Android 2.3 Gingerbread

PHONE MAKER Sony Ericsson has announced that it will start rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread to its Xperia X10 handset in August.

A date for the upgrade has been long awaited by Sony Ericsson customers and it's unfortunately later than planned by over a month. In March the word was that Sony Ericsson would kick off the rollout towards the end of the second quarter or early in the third quarter.

Today's blog post said, "Development and testing is still ongoing and the current plan is [to] start the roll-out in the beginning of August."

The upgrade will bring the handset up to date with more recent handsets like the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc, which come with Gingerbread.

To the delight of X10 users the update won't change the camera user interface, so it won't lose features. It will also add new features such as a WiFi hotspot capability, various widgets, a customisable app tray on the home screen, the ability to install apps to the SD card and support for Flash 10.3.

A disappointment for users might be that the upgrade won't bring with it DLNA, which is found on this year's Xperia models.

Some comments to the demo video of Gingerbread running on the X10 included, "The camera app makes it worth upgrading, thanks SE" and "i think gingerbread runs really good on the x10. but we have to wait till august to get the update".

Sony Ericsson reiterated on its blog that the Xperia X10 mini and mini pro and X8 won't be getting any updates due to a lack of memory.

There has also been controversy over whether a rival handset, the HTC Desire, will be getting the Gingerbread upgrade or not. This was also due to a memory issue but HTC caved in to customer demand.

However, not all customers will get the Gingerbread update. Sony Ericsson said, "Even if there will be some operator kits getting this upgrade, as said before - some of you will not be able to upgrade your customized version of Xperia X10." µ
