TAIWANESE SMARTPHONE MAKER HTC has had a sudden change of heart and announced that its Desire smartphone will get the upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread after all.
On its Facebook page, HTC appears to have given in to the uproar and demands for the Gingerbread upgrade from its Desire users. It was only yesterday that the firm had announced, to the disappointment and anger of its customers, that the HTC Desire wouldn't be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.
Today's message reads, "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire." Almost as if yesterday's post was a mistake.
The problem was supposedly a memory issue that meant the upgrade from Android 2.2 Froyo to Android 2.3 Gingerbread would mean sacrificing Sense, HTC's overlay user interface for Android.
We've contacted HTC to find out why it has changed its mind and whether the update will still mean the loss of Sense. Unfortunately HTC has been unable so far to give us any further details other than the one-liner on Facebook and we'll update this report if it responds with a comment.
Nevertheless the statement has been received fairly well, with users commenting, "Today HTC realised this and have a tiny window of reversal. Good on them for opening their eyes." And, "At least HTC listen. You can at least give them that."
It goes to show that if customers kick up enough fuss then the company will listen instead of ignoring what customers want. Maybe the users who were planning on ditching HTC will have a rethink.
Update
Mobile operator Three refused to give us comment on yesterday's announcement and has only given The INQUIRER the extremely informative statement, "There's been a turnaround in HTC's decision to launch Gingerbread for the Desire. Once we have more info we'll let you know."
We're still waiting to hear from Orange for its reaction. µ
Any chance you could also ask O2 to comment on when we can expect Gingerbread on our Desires/give them a swift kick up the rear? Much appreciated.
If I recall correctly, it took at least 6 months, if not more, to get Froyo on my O2 Desire from the time HTC released firmware, nevermind from the original release by Google.
Steve there has given me the idea that it might be time to de-brand my phone.
@Dai, mate, I don't know if you actually use your DesireHD or not, but I for one, noticed many new better things; the phone is faster and more fluid, the new notifications section and Quick settings are great, battery life is a bit better and at last I can use my hands free speaker to issue voice commands to call people while driving, this is something that 2.2 did not do. All this in addition to some serious security and bug fixes under the bonnet, mate, be thankful we got it.
The carriers are the biggest cause of withheld firmware updates!
Maybe you should ask Orange and 3 how long end users will have to wait after HTC release the update for them to fart arse about with it and add a load of pointless crap.
Which is the reason why I either debrand my phone or just outright purchase it direct.
Boring. I thought this article was about cannabis and cookies. I should have known that HTC wasn't the same as THC!
After getting Gingerbread on the DesireHD, I can confirm it's not even worth the time waiting for the download to complete. If you concentrate hard you might notice a slight speed increase but that's about it.
A lot of hype over nothing? Purposely caused by HTC to show they are a caring company who actually listen? Ever the cynic.
Don't worry Desire users, you'll only be disappointed with the lack of new features when it finally arrives but prepare the burning pitchforks just in case it doesn't
