HTC Desire won’t get a Gingerbread upgrade

Disappointment after such a long wait
Tue Jun 14 2011, 16:50

TAIWANESE SMARTPHONE MAKER HTC has announced its Desire handset will not be getting the Android upgrade it had promised.

HTC has disappointed Desire owners by telling them that they will no longer be getting the upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread that it promised back in February. The announcement came only an hour ago via its Facebook page, an announcement channel we're seeing more and more.

HTC said, "Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you've come to expect from our phones."

The post on the social notworking web site continued to explain that it wasn't possible because a lack of memory meant that the phone couldn't have both Gingerbread and HTC Sense. HTC apologised by saying, "We're sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you."

Some reactions to the post included, "thats not good more than dissapointend, may need to rethink who will get my custom when phone is due for renewal", and, "Gutted! Only got my Desire 3 months ago".

We've contacted HTC, which confirmed that the post relates only to the Desire and not other versions like the Desire HD, which has already had the upgrade to Gingerbread.

The memory is there on the Desire - 512MB to be exact - for Gingerbread but not without sacrificing HTC's Sense overlay. HTC doesn't want to do that so it would rather leave Desire users as they are and hope that they will stick with the company when they upgrade. µ

You might want to update this Story again.

It seems that the current wave of sentiment has given HTC some time to reflect its decision and, will release an update after all...

Rooted & 2.3

Who needs the bloated HTC sense? I finally took the plunge and rotted my desire, grabbed one of the many gingerbread updates out there and havent looked back.

HTC APPOLOGY NOT GOOD ENOUGH

ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER PHONE MANUFACTURER ( HTC ) HAVE RIPPED OFF ALL THEIR HTC DESIRE USERS . THEY KNEW FULL WELL THAT THEY WOULD'T GET THE UPDATE. KEPT THEM HANGING ALL THIS TIME. HTC ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN FORCING IT'S USERS TO KEEP UPGRADING THEIR MOBILE PHONES MORE OFTEN THAN APPLE DOES WITH THE IPHONE.. HTC , STOP RIPPING YOUR CUSTOMERS OFF...

RE: iPhone 3GS gets iOS5

Just because you could "upgrade" the 3GS to IOS5 doesn't mean that it is a good idea - plenty of people have done that with their older iphones in the past and have regretted it, the usual complaint being that their iphone seems slower.

Ditch Sense

Better that they ditch the useless bloatware that is Sense and upgrade Gingerbread, that's what most users would probably prefer.

HTC = Horrible Treatment of Customers

grrr

that is lame. I'm sure they could have made it work. Guess I'll have to root... I had to root my last htc as well. I think they should keep my phone up to date at least as long as my contract. As in 2-3 years. After that sure, I'll get a new phone.

Cyanogen mod is the fix

The fix is simple. Go with the Cyanogen mod, heck it works on my HTC Legend which is even lower end than the Desire.

No Sense? No big loss

My Desire (CDMA, since I'm American) was been running Cyanogenmod 3 days after I bought it, and Cynogenmod version 7 (Android Gingerbread) since daily builds started coming out. HTC's failure at proper software engineering has no effect on me, and Gingerbread on my HTC is sweet indeed.

Sense + Gingerbread

Check out the desire forum on xda developers. Custom roms with Gingerbread and Sense have been available for months.

senseless htc

Wtf is this htc sense? I only turn it off all the time, its just intrusion in the real sense and brand building for them through our social networks. A promise is a promise, looks like i've compromised buying HTC. They'll learn a lesson thru this.

Very disappointing

Not impressed with their false promises and re-emphasises the lack of internal memory on htc's phones (old and new!!)!

Lack of access to the HTC EVO 3D in Europe also shows that HTC sees us as a secondary market.

Also way too many handsets. Create a couple of good ones not a lot of half baked once.

The HTC Desire was brilliant when it came out but HTC doesn't seem to be able to repeat that success or provide continued support for the Desire.

I'm about to get a new phone and will have to seriously reconsider LG and Samsung if this is how HTC's customers are treated.

HTC havent the Sense they were born with

Stock Gingerbread it is then, Sense is just bloatware anyway. Now I'll get my upgrades on time. The point about Android is that it upgrades quickly, I bought the desire a year ago because with a 1Ghz processor I expected it to cope with several generations of Android. Next time I won't be buying HTC.
P.S. Why can't they put sense on the SD card?

768 MB is too little

Desire HD has 768MB while Desire has only 512MB. That is, HTC thinks that at least 768 MB are necessary for Gingerbread.

So it is not impossible that Android 3.x or its successor will raise the bar to 1024 MB (1 GB). Which leaves us with a great conclussion: it is not worth to buy the HTC Sensation, because only has 768 MB, and may allow only a single upgrade.

HTC should have placed 1 GB in the Sensation (as Samsung does in Galaxy S II) or at least give better upgrade support to customers with "low spec" hardware which was high spec just a year ago.

Sorry HTC: one more reason for the Galaxy S II.

Big Deal

The only extra on Gingerbread is contactless payment which the Desire does not have the hardware for so who cares? Sense is why you get an HTC so why slow it down with a Senseless upgrade?

this is the last htc device i will be getting

I chose the desire over the galaxy s because this is where HTC usualy excel over Samsung... device support. Looks like I have been wrong about HTC, think a galaxy s 2 will be replacing my desire in the Not so distant future.

Just install Cyanogenmod

As somebody else said, just root it and install Cyanogenmod.
Problem solved.

Calm down, just root the damn phone and install a ROM

My Desire is currently running Android 2.3.3 and has been for the last month.

You first have to root it (Google around for the instructions) then install a program called ROM Manager from the app store. From there you download the ROM you want(which is a package of software updates. Wipes your phone though, so best to back up.

I went with Cyanogenmod, my phone is now MUCH faster. Flicking between screens is noticeably smoother.

I think its because all the HTC Sense garbage is gone, and I haven't lost any functionality. Anything HTC Sense offers, Android can do itself.

Seriously, I hated the Desire before I rooted it. Was almost tempted by a shiny toy. Not any more though.

F**kin liars

What a brilliant way to deceive your customers htc. I now know that my Desire replacement won't be a htc and my first tablet neither.

Root it

HTC are a joke, i'd be inclined to root it and flas hit with the nexus one rom.

Consumer rights?

If you bought a phone with this promise made, then it probably isn't legally "as described" and you're entitled to a refund or, if mutually agreeable, a replacement upgrade.

On the other hand, I sincerely wish you the very best luck getting that upgrade from a phone company. And their terms are a bit murkier anyway than "bought the phone at retail price". And for that matter, maybe they aren't responsible for promises from the manufacturer.

On the other other hand, they may have an upgrade route for you anyway - or else a competitor does.

Be happy without updates

Another reminder that you should make sure you are happy with the version on it when you buy it and not buy it and then hope you get an upgrade.
