SOFTWARE MAKER Swype has released the latest 3.0 beta version of its fast text input application for smartphones and tablets.
Swype is a software application that allows one continues finger motion across a keyboard to input text, and now it has some new features. Tap prediction has been added so you can switch between swyping and tapping.
A horizontal word choice list replaces the previous word choice window. This is inline with the normal predictive options you would find on a standard Android handset and makes it much easier to select words.
A specialised version for Android Honeycomb tablets lets you move the keyboard around the screen to centre, left or right positions and resize it. Swype said it's a feature "you won't find anywhere else!"
To get the 3.0 beta version you'll need to visit Swype's web site to find the link for the free download. If you don't have Swype already then you can register pretty easily and get going.
We downloaded the latest version onto a handset to have a quick go with it and were impressed. It's slightly strange the first time you try it, especially if you're used to tapping. The tutorial will instruct you quickly and it's fast to type lots of text.
We like the fact you can avoid using the space key because Swype adds in spaces for you and the text prediction is accurate. If you have a smartphone or tablet but haven't tried Swype yet then we suggest you give it a go. µ

SlideIT has had tablet support, resizing and predictive tapping for months, not to mention a "horizontal suggestion bar", which is so trivial it is not even listed as a "feature". They can even combine tapping and swyping. I always feel that Swype is one step behind them and is just looking at what SlideIT does and coping it with a fancier look. Sorry, but the original is usually (and this is no exception) better.
