Virgin Media reaches four million homes with 'superfast' broadband

One million per month rollout

BROADBAND PROVIDER Virgin Media has announced its fastest broadband service has reached over four million homes across the UK.

Since we last reported on Virgin's progress in its mission to roll out 'superfast' broadband it has reached three million homes in less than three months. It passed the one million mark back in March and since then Virgin has surpassed the four million milestone.

The UK's fastest broadband is available in over 100 towns and Virgin Media said it is on course to hook up nearly 13 million homes by mid 2012.

If Virgin keep up the rollout rate of one million homes per month that it has achieved over the past few months it will hit the 13 million homes objective in March next year.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media said, "With four million homes now able to 'get in the fast lane' with our 100Mb service, the UK is racing up the broadband league tables and we're delighted to be playing the leading role in boosting the UK's digital infrastructure."

The 100Mbits/s service will cost £35 a month if you go for a Virgin Media phone line, otherwise it'll be £45 a month. The ultrafast speed will potentially download a music album in five seconds or an HD film in seven minutes.

If 100Mbits/s isn't fast enough for you then Virgin is also trialing 1.5Gbits/s broadband in London, which it claims is the fastest in the world. This is unlikely to come soon and when it does it will probably cost an arm and a leg. µ

If Palin wins the Republican nomination

I predict that there will be a Facebook group called Republicans for Obama, or something similar.

1GBps for $70

Just read today that Sonic.net are bringing 1GB broadband to homes in California. The difference is that they're only charging $70 a month.

Lucky gits.

The downside is that it's in a country where there's a very remote chance Sarah Palin could become president.
