Kate Middleton and Tony Blair were hacked in NOTW scandal

List of those hacked by tabloid journalists grows

THE NEWS OF THE WORLD (NOTW) phone hacking scandal has escalated to a higher level with the inclusion of members of the royal family and key political figures, including Prince Edward, Kate Middleton and Tony Blair.

The list of victims of a newspaper hacking operation by Rupert Murdoch's tabloid rag includes not only Prince Edward, but Prince William's girlfriend at the time and now wife Kate Middleton. The Countess of Wessex and the Duke and Duchess of Kent were also targeted, with allegations surfacing that their bank accounts were also hacked, according to The Guardian.

Political figures were also top of the list, with former prime minister Tony Blair a supposed victim of the hacks, as was Balir's media adviser Alastair Campbell. Former home secretary Jack Straw and former trade secratary Peter Mandelson were also hacked.

If that was not enough, high level police and banking officials were not excluded. The former commissioner of the London Metropolitan police, Sir John Stevens, and the assistant commissioner, John Yates, were named. In addition, the governor and deputy governor of the Bank of England were victims, with their mortgage account details stolen and sold on.

In fact, lawyers have previously estimated that the total number of hacked phones could total 7,000. While not all of these might be famous or high-ranking, it's likely we'll find more big names among this number.

Journalist Jonathan Rees is accused of hacking the phones and computers of the rich and powerful, along with organising burglaries of the property of some of these people. Even the secret intelligent service MI6 was not off Rees' radar, with accusations that he was involved in illegally obtaining information about its agents in a 2006 infiltration of the Provisional IRA.

A number of other News of the World journalists, including Glenn Mulcaire, Ian Edmondson, Neville Thurlbeck and James Weatherup are alleged to have been involved in the scandal. The tabloid newspaper has set up a fund to pay out reparations for the damage it has caused, but it's likely that the ongoing investigation of the incidents will result in criminal prosecutions. µ

Why is no one blaiming the telcos

This their issue. By default voice mail accounts either have no PIN set or is set with a default PIN.

Why is no one having a go at them for their non-existent security?

Lucky Rupert

Lucky for Rupert that he lives in enlightened times. Otherwise it would be a long stay in the Tower before being convicted of conspiracy and treason for spying on a royal, and executed by particularly messy means.
