CHIPMAKER Intel has announced that it will release the source code for its Distributed Scene Graph 3D Internet technology.
Intel has been pushing Opensim, an open source virtual world simulator for education, social networking and of course gaming. Intel's work has been concentrated on how to increase the number of people, known as avatars, that can inhabit a virtual world from hundreds to thousands.
At Intel's annual research event, the firm said that it will open source its Distributed Scene Graph 3D Internet technology and an advanced ray-tracing package that it claims will decrease the time it takes to render realistic images by half on systems that use Intel's chips.
Intel also announced that it will open another research centre at the University of California, Berkeley where the researchers will focus on computer security problems. Intel also demonstrated a product of its Many-Core Applications research where its research partners are working on applications that take advantage of a 48-core concept chip in Intel's labs.
The mention of 3D worlds and avatars might bring back memories of Second Life, however creating virtual worlds is not a trivial issue. Apart from the considerable processing power that's required, it places significant demands on the network to ensure things are working smoothly. Being able to scale up virtual worlds so that they can be used for more than just wasting time has become a considerable area of research.
