With Q in decline and disarray, Carly (Fiorina) might well be acquiring the island of Atlantis - James C. Blasius
RECENT MICROSOFT ACQUISITION Skype has plunged into darkness for the second time in as many weeks.
The service, which offers internet-based chat and video as well as low cost calls, is currently offline, although we are unable to say how many users are affected.
The outage swept through the INQUIRER team, regardless of what OS any of us was using, like the food poisoning we received at last summer's ill-fated barbeque and, at the time of going to press, is ongoing.
Twitter is brimming with complaints about the downage, and a sample selection ranged from the patient, to the impatient, to the totally unreasonable.
Skype has tweeted that only a small number of users are affected and said it is looking into the problem.
"A small number of you may have problems signing in to Skype. We're investigating the cause, and hope to have more details to share soon," it said.
Last time this happened Skype offered its users a quick fix that although was relatively simple may have intimidated some of its users. This was followed rather swiftly with an update that solved problems. Problems until now that is.
Microsoft could soon be regretting its rather large payout for the firm, as if these crashes continue users will soon find another favourite online chat service.
Update
Skype has updated its guidance for lost users and about an hour after it confirmed initial reports of problems it announced that it had found the cause and was readying a fix. "We've identified the cause of the problem, and have begun to address it," it said before directing us to its web site.
Under the headline ‘Problems signing in to Skype' the firm explained that a configuration error had kicked ‘some' users off the service.
We've identified the cause of the problem, and have begun to address it. If you've been affected, you should start to see improvement in the next hour or so", wrote Skype's Peter Parkes. "You shouldn't need to manually sign back in to Skype - it should reconnect automatically when it's able to do so. We apologise for the disruption to your conversations."
For its part the INQUIRER is pretty much back to normal. µ

What do they mean by "small numbers"?
I am in Canada, and I was not only cut off from login. The opened app just crashed during the chat with access violation in KERNELBASE.dll, and crashed every other time I try to re-open it.
Note, that this is an absolute first time I see such a total breakage of Skype, and I use this tool since it was in Beta, and the company wouldn't be that ignorant to put an diminishing adjective on the # of affected users. :)
The article states that Microsoft said that Skype would me fixed in the next few hours. When was the article written? I can see the time but it doesn't clarify the time zone.
Baghdad also and checked family via phone in Bosnia , they have same problem , NO SKYPE.
My Skype is back on... as well as one of my contacts.
Skype down on Lancaster University campus too.
Yep Scotland is out and the Czech Republic is out. And no it isn't just login, it dumps you if you are already in.
half of malta is out too :(
we keep getting intermittent "trying to connect" and "connected" status
A colleague and I both cannot connect via Skype. Skype program says it is having problems connecting. They are lying again when they say it is a small number of users.
Only 2.6 million users online compared to normal. Small number of people effected eh!
Yep. everyone down here in our office in Dublin, as well as contacts in Pakistan and Dubai! Very sudden and abrupt as well. Completely crashed on my desktop and everyone else had the same experience within seconds! Skynet is alive!!!!
I can say that Skype is down in all south-eastern European countries so official Skype statement is nothing but rubbish.
I guess small it's a subjective adjective after all...wonder what they call small number.
258 contacts, and not a single one accessable on my Windows 7 computer, however my Vista computer still shows the normal number online, but I cant contact anyone
none of my contacts can connect and I have contacts in the US, Israel, Germany and Australia...
At this rate Im begging facebook to update their chat service with a video link to compete with Skype...:o
Well I know for sure Skype is down in Pakistan. I won’t be able to say how many are effected but it’s not working in Pakistan (South Asia).
Not a single person in our office has Skype working at the moment, one after one everyone crashed out...
This is getting mighty ridiculous -.-
Are any of the other "small number of affected users" starting to really get annoyed with this?
I have 24 contacts on my Skype ranging from South Africa to China.... none of us can connect....
In our company of 50 people nobody can cannect. So much for a small number...
This is not acceptable when being used for business use will they compensate for loss of business ??? will it be the same fix as last time ?????
Though there may not real correlation between the skype crash and acquisition by Microsoft, Skype will loose it's credit if this continues..Last time only a couple of our team mates had problem but now our entire team :(
I am in connecticut and the service is down. not a word from skype. can somebody give an update on the problem?
It's time to move on Gtalk.
I thought this crash might prompt me into re-installing one of the older, more attractive, more reliable versions of Skype....but that isn't working either. It's such a worthwhile application but why do they keep making it worse?
out of 26 skype users in my floor 24 skype crashes. :-)
Interesting - of all people I know on our floor - we are 250 - all Skypes have crashed. The message should read 'A small number of you can still login' :)
