Lucid releases Virtu for AMD's Bulldozer and Intel's Sandy Bridge

Virtualisation for chips that aren't available yet
Wed Jun 01 2011, 09:01

SOFTWARE HOUSE Lucid has demonstrated its GPU virtualisation software on a range of machines running integrated graphics from AMD and Intel.

Lucid's Virtu software spreads the computation load between multiple GPUs, essentially acting as a GPU hypervisor. Lucid showed off its Virtu Universal software that dynamically allocates resources between integrated and discrete GPUs on Intel's Sandy Bridge and AMD's Brazos and Bulldozer lines of chips.

Offir Remez, president and founder of Lucid said, "It was a natural step for us to extend this capability to all Sandy Bridge platforms including notebooks and AIO [all-in-one] PCs as well as sharing it with the AMD fanbase."

Lucid also announced Virtual Vsync software that removes the vsync limit of 60FPS that can result in image tearing. The firm claims support for unlimited frame rates, giving the user the ability to cap frame rates if they want.

System builders working on machines using AMD's upcoming Bulldozer chips and Intel's G41, H61, H67 and Z68 chipsets can now license Lucid's Virtu Universal software. The ability to dynamically load balance two GPUs is becoming increasingly important as both AMD and Intel aim to put ever more powerful graphics capabilities into their chips.

Lucid claims that its Virtu software has been tested on hundreds of games that work with it. µ

Have people forgot about the next gen i7s?

Even with the B3 stepping unlocked will the processor be able to smash the next i7 coming out? We all have to remember that AMD has been working on this CPU for over 4 years. Let's hope Socket AM3+ just won't be another repetition of socket 939!!!

huh?

Vsync comment 100% opposite of true (who needs more than 60fps anyway? unless you're running 3D, 60 is the best your monitor can display anyway - this comment makes no sense).

Bulldozer currently has no current IGP but bulldozer cores will eventually replace the PhenomII cores in Llano - I guess that must be what they are talking about.

AMD discrete cards and IGPs already work in hybrid mode by default anyway. So this really is about bring a technology to Intel that AMD already has.

Duh?

G41 is a S775 chipset and doesnt support Sandybridge. Your article says Virtu is for SB. If its also for S775 then what about S1156 chips?

n00b IT journalist

Not only copy paste but inaccurate as well!

VSYNC does not result in image tearing, quite the contrary -- ABSENCE of VSYNC results in tearing.

LOL

"allocates resources between integrated and discrete GPUs on Intel's Sandy Bridge and AMD's Brazos and Bulldozer lines of chips."

I know it's copy paste from the press release but someone should have noticed that Bulldozer has no IGP.
