SOFTWARE HOUSE Google mentioned at Computex that its Chrome operating system (OS) is intended for notebooks only, at least for now.
Google has confirmed to The INQUIRER that a statement made by Sundar Pichai at Computex saying that Chrome is for notebooks only was correct.
Pichai, Google's SVP for Chrome said, "Chrome OS is a computer model designed with various form factors in mind, but we are entirely focused on the notebook form factor for now. We have no other plans at this time."
Although we recently reported on the Chromium PC that runs Chrome OS, the important point is that we won't be seeing the operating system appear on any tablet devices, at least not for a while. It also seems that Google is not contemplating any merge of its Chrome OS with its established Android mobile OS.
We learned earlier this month that the first notebooks to run the Chrome OS will come from Acer and Samsung. They are both due to tip up some time in June, with Samsung's offering to be dubbed the "Chromebook".
Android 3.0 Honeycomb, especially made for tablet devices, is proving to be a hit so we're not too surprised that Google is keeping the two operating systems separate. However, we're confident that we'll eventually see Chrome OS move onto devices other than notebooks, sometime in the future. µ
