MSI releases a Geforce GTX580 card that changes colour

Or rather its heatsink fans do

GRAPHICS CARD VENDOR Micro Star International (MSI) has released its N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition, which it claims is the world's most powerful graphics card.

MSI chose its home town trade show Computex to release a clutch of products including its top-of-the-range N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition based on Nvidia's Geforce GTX580 GPU. The board features 3GB of GDDR5 memory and while most graphics card vendors talk about GPU and memory clock speeds, MSI seems to be keen to point out the ability to overclock its card.

Not only does MSI promote its Afterburner overclocking utility, the firm even packs fans that have a special coating that changes colour depending on the temperature of the board. The Smart Temp Sensor will cause the fan to change from blue to white when the temperature of the board exceeds 45C.

It seems that MSI has bestowed most of its attention on the N580GTX's fans, making the blades spin in the opposite direction for the first 30 seconds. This apparently "helps to remove dust from the heatsink fins to ensure optimal cooling every time".

MSI put a caveat on its claim of having the world's most powerful graphics card by saying that its N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition is the fastest single chip card around. It reserved the more general accolade of fastest graphics card for its N590GTX board based on Nvidia's dual chip Geforce GTX590 design.

MSI did not include pricing information but other vendors' 3GB Geforce GTX580 graphics cards retail for around the £450 mark. µ
