US CAR GIANT Ford has been demonstrating its Ford Sync system. The hands-free in-car interface allows you to play songs from various smartphones, read back text messages and allow users to set navigation routes using the driver's voice commands. The Ford Focus with Sync will come to the UK in 2012. µ

What a minger

I haven't seen so much clutter on screen since the Win 3.1 days. Not to mention that awful visual design so you cant focus quickly on what is important. And that is why I would never buy this new focus, the nav/tech screen would drive me crazy!

Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive operating system

Yes it runs on Microsoft Windows.

At least you wont have your car hacked to shreds like if it was running some flavour of LINUX...

I won't buy it.

Is Ford going to run Microsoft software? That would give the word crash a new meaning!
How about the car's CAN bus? Is Ford going to run gadgets and entertainment programs via the same bus which is being used for the engine, breaks etc.? Buyer beware.

Another distraction for moronic drivers

I love gadgets & new tech as well as the next geek, but having a handy built-in phone/media/Internet/GPS touchscreen device accessible to the driver is only going to exacerbate the growing distracted-while-driving phenomenon. The fact that the touchscreen is located off angle to the road magnifies the problem. They could have at least incorporated a voice command only HUD (heads up display) to help keep the driver's eyes on the road and to also prevent the idiot from fiddling with the touchscreen when he/she should be paying attention to the road.

The 'good' new is that it's only going to get worse as more manufacturers adopt and expand the functionality of this craziness!
