Zuckerberg comes out of the serial killer closet

Lock up your livestock
Fri May 27 2011, 14:10

FACEBOOK CEO Mark Zuckerberg has outed himself as a butcher of animals.

Keep your livestock safe folks, Zuckerberg has embarked on a year-long challenge to kill any meat he puts down his gullet to get a better understanding of sustainable farming and not take God's creatures for granted.

In some ways, it's a honourable thing to do. Zuckerberg's personal challenge last year was to spend an hour every day learning how to speak Mandarin. He also spent every day in 2009 bedecked in a tie for no apparent reason. But, if goats and chickens could think, they'd probably wish Zuckerberg had stuck to languages, as he came at them with a big ole carving knife to slit their throats.

According to CNN Fortune, this bizarre challenge came out after Zuckerberg posted something up on his private Facebook page where he said he'd just killed a pig and a goat.

"The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," said Zuckerberg.

Apparently, the practice started off on the soft stuff like fish and lobster before he moved on to the hard stuff, killing land animals like pigs, goats and chickens. He and his girlfriend send his kill to a posh butcher shop in Santa Cruz where the meat is prepped. Zuckerberg and his missus then don't waste a thing, eating every part of the slaughtered animals including the hearts and livers.

Zuckerberg even went so far as to a send quite a long email to Fortune to explain his fondness for butchering livestock, but he seems to think that killing his dinner equates to being a vegetarian.

"This year I've basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself," he said.

The confused Facebook CEO has probably also insulted real vegetarians, who likely won't indulge in killing their own dinner based upon Zuckerberg's self-justification.

In his own weird way, Zuckerberg seemed to be trying to do the right thing, but he also said he was thinking about taking up hunting as well, which seemed to have little to do with the rationale that he provided for personally killing his own farm animals. Maybe he should give Godaddy CEO Bob Parsons a call so they can kill African big game and say they are doing the farmers a favour. We hear that Parsons' elephant soup is to die for. µ

Yes, CEO's come in stupid too.

"...and not take God's creatures for granted."

- This is 2011 people. God is dead.

"In some ways, it's a honourable thing to do."

- Oh really? How about you kill an animal with you bare hands? Make sure you stare into its eyes as it dies and let me know all that gooey warm honor you feel. There's as much honor in that as there is in raping an infant child. Kill something with your size and your abilities & happens to be a threat to you or your family; that's honor.

"But, if goats and chickens could think..."

-Rather, if ignorant humans could think, maybe then they'd realize that they are equals. If I know calculus and you don't does that mean I can eat you? C'mon use the brain.

"...he said he'd just killed a pig and a goat."

- I'd love to stab him.

"The only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself..."

- Does it really matter? I mean if you were killed, would it really matter why how and who? and who eats you? Your dead. Oh ya I forgot most people think there's something after death; and only for humans too, not animals. Kinda anthropocentric aye?

"This year I've basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself"

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian ...And anyways it is furthermore a lie proven by this line:

"He and his girlfriend send his kill to a posh butcher shop in Santa Cruz where the meat is prepped."

- So he's still a spineless wad.

"In his own weird way, Zuckerberg seemed to be trying to do the right thing"

- Right? Sorry nothing right about anything here. All wrong. It's wrong that people like this get to have the comfortable life. While the innocent sentient lives get feces, rape, enslavement and death for life. My entire life to this day I have never been hurt by one animal; yet I've been hurt by countless people. I should go cannibal.

"...but he also said he was thinking about taking up hunting as well.."

- I love hunting accidents: R.I.P.M.Z.

@buffy

Hey 'buffy', if you write a comment and find it's 3 times longer than the article, and in fact longer than a newspaper in-depth editorial, then perhaps you should reconsider and edit before posting.

As for zuckerberg, clearly he went off his rocker and you might find a large collection of bottles with his urine in his house I expect.
BSE maybe?

Good article

Zuckerberg is still a murderer and a hypocrite, just like all people who consume or use animal products. His move to kill animals himself might actually encourage his fans to enjoy slaughtering animals and watching them bleed. It is incredibly disgusting that the most famous entrepreneur on earth is so blind and selfish that he cannot understand the meaning of vegetarian and that he deems it OK to deprive animals of their right to live for his own satisfaction. Perhaps someone should try cutting his throat, just to prove his "transparency" and then just be thankful for the kill he was able to make. For Zuckerberg's information, you don't have to kill a sentient being to survive - regardless of who does the killing or how. People have known this for ages. But the carnivore conspiracy keeps everyone silent.

Awful title. Personally slanted journalism. Disgraceful.

- Misleading title. Drawing a correlation between only eating what you kill, and being a "serial killer" is the same type of distorted logic that comes out of zealots mouths when they draw a correlation between homosexuality and bestiality (or perhaps the author falls into that category as well).
- Anthropologically, the more wealthy a society becomes, the more we push the necessary violences of society into the shadows of the fringe, food "harvesting" in particular. We don't even have butcher shops anymore, with carcasses visible from the front counter. You now buy your meat by men in clean white aprons, at the meat counter of the mega-grocery store, with 80s-90s pop tunes playing in the background. Or worse, in cellophane packages after the meat has been treated with gasses or chems to pink it up.
-This distancing leads to a disconnect between the animal that gave it's life to nourish us. We have no respect for it. Make no mistake, we would not have made the evolutionary leap that we did without the animal proteins to fuel our massive brains, and we've had domesticated food animals for millennia.
-There's nothing wrong or unnatural being an omnivore in it's full sense. There is something wrong with not valuing the lives of our food stocks. Terrible living conditions, unnatural diets that lead to disease, necessitating keeping the animals on a form of life support with antibiotics, electrolytes needing to be added to their food, even forced cannibalism, leading to prion disease (mad cow). It's barbaric.
If we respected our animals, and realized how close they are to our health, our life, even how close they are to us in form- there would be less abuse, less waste, less cruelty, less gluttony.
-I applaud Zuckerberg for this _small_ step. The raising, and slaughtering of an animal is only part of the equation. I'd like to see him butchering as well, although there's a good deal of skill necessary to properly butcher, perhaps there's less waste at this stage by using a professional, but I hope he's trying to learn.
-I guarantee his animals are leading a much healthier, happier life, and are better food sources for him & his family. Free-range/grass-fed beef is extremely healthy, with low cholesterol, and an omega fat profile as good, or better in some cases, as most fish. I realize beef wasn't mentioned on Zuckerberg's current menu, but we know that all properly kept food animals, with natural (close to ancestral) diets, are much better food sources for the human body than commercially farmed ones. Yes, there are plant sources for omega-3's, but the human body doesn't seem to utilize it as efficiently as animal sources (this isn't to say that one can't get all or some of their necessary omega 3's from plants, it's just not optimal).
- I also hope he is using the useful products left over post-butchering that can benefit an organic garden. Hopefully he invests the same amount of time and energy into his gardening as he does into his livestock.
- It would also be great if he's fishing for his own fish. By fishing himself, he guarantees knowing the species of fish he's taking home, there's no unnecessary deaths through by-catch, AND he can gather a bit of kelp (if on the ocean) to supplement the garden & the animal feed with it.

-I'm not a fan of Zuckerberg- not because of the movie (I didn't see it), but because of some of the moves he made to develop FB, and some of the moves FB has made, which I now only use once a month or so to check on a relative overseas. I'm impressed with this decision of his, provided it isn't merely for the elevation of brand Zuckerberg.
-My parents are both upper/upper-middle class professionals, but both came from poor farming families, and our family was pretty poor until I was early-mid teens and my parents had their loans paid off & practices established. I spent a lot of time as a child and teen working on small family farms that were constantly being squeezed by the banks & mega-farmers trying to get land. I know the meaning of HARD work. I know what it takes to raise a food animal from birth to butcher, and it's not an easy or instant process, particularly on small farms using "organic" type methods.
-I grew up a hunter as well. Learning to use every part of my prey, learning a respect for nature. I'm an agnostic, but if there is a god, I commune with him/her when I'm marveling at the wonders of the beauty of nature. It's tenderness, and it's savagery. I love it so much, I made studying it my profession- I'm a biologist.
-I'm an active environmentalist. I worked with Earth First, and a few other groups I don't care to name, back during University. I lived as a vegetarian for months on end when I would field Medic for the Rainbow Family, or during the big Grateful Dead tours. Granted, all a long time ago, but I even hope to have time to do a tour with Sea Shepherds sometime in the next 5-10years (but hopefully they will achieve their goal before then).
=True hunters, the ones who walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, or the cultural footsteps of Native Americans, not the wealthy people who use aircraft to gain the high ground vantage on their prey, or the ones that hunt animals that have been led to a feeder, or through a narrow chokepoint, all basically just to be able to kill an animal- but TRUE hunters, ones who pack in, stalk their animal, make sure they have the perfect shot so the animal doesn't suffer needlessly, the ones who use all parts of the animal (many donate excess meat that they can't fit in their freezer to the less fortunate- a welcome source of high quality protein and DHA necessary for the development of young brains), and the ones who pack out, leaving only footprint- you will find are, as a general rule, staunch defenders of the environment. Great lovers of the wilderness.
-Most people kill to eat- either by proxy, or directly. Those who do so directly often result in far more humane treatment to the animal, as well as a great deal more respect for the intricate web of nature that we are a part of.
-Zuckerberg may be a douc*ebag in some areas, but to attack him on this is more douc*baggery- based on the political-dietary activism most often seen in upper-middle class teens with nothing better to do with their time. The only people who mix their food & politics that are respectable are the vegans, and while they may be irritating, they walk the walk and earn respect.
-If the author of this piece eats any animal protein, or even worse, if he doesn't, but has leather anywhere in his life, he has lost the moral high ground by using cheap biases and personal weaknesses to smear a man.
*(and because I won't be reading the comments of this article again, and I know it may come up- I'm a liberal. Pretty active one at that. So no can accuse me of being a "christian" conservative regurgitating the popular memes)

I'm with Mike: If everybody was forced to slaughter their own animals, I guarantee 95% would go vegetarian.

The author isn't an idiot, he's just so disconnected (like most of you) from the misery of animals and his appetite.

Becoming a vegetarian or deciding to harvest your own meat is the most amazing choice you will ever make. You are truly taking a stand against the toxicity of the industry.

Zuckerberg is simply against factory meat farms

This article is moronic and the majority of commenters are worse with their completely senseless comments. Anyone with a brain larger than a walnut can draw the conclusion that Zuckerberg is stating his opposition to systematic harvesting of meats in factory slaughterhouses. He is saying that it is not immoral to eat meat, since we need it to survive, but if you're going to eat it then don't have someone else kill it for you, have the guts to kill it yourself so you understand exactly what you're doing. and let the animal live a normal life and die in a natural way, at the hands of a predator, instead of being pumped full of antibiotics to keep it alive and stuffed with GMO soy and hormones to fatten up prematurely, then getting shocked to death on an assembly line conveyor belt. I guarantee you the animals that he is killing do not come from sardine-packed factory farms, but rather free-range farms where the animals live normal lives before slaughter. The best position to take would be to only eat meat you hunt yourself, and ideally skin and prep yourself. That way you allow all animals to live in a wild state before they die. I live in the city and eat meat from the grocery store (I try to eat grass-fed only), so I don't follow my own advice, but if practical it is a more moral mode of existence to hunt and kill your own meat. Anyone who does that should never be criticized.

Hunting not unethical

Obviously, author Spencer lives in a place which has given him a misunderstanding of what real meat hunting is and what it is for. Not everyone hunts lions in africa- some of us do it because natural predators in the wild are few and far between and without hunting, animals like deer and elk overpopulate and starve, or get chronic wasting disease. It's a perfectly legitimate and reasonable thing to do. Just because you probably don't know where your meat comes from except in the most abstract way possible doesn't mean that other smarter people (I'd say it's probably a fair bet that Zuckerburg is smarter than you) don't think about it and try to behave in a ethical, sustainable way.

Zuckerberg is a moron! The term "vegetarian" has the word vegetable as its root. Killing an animal is completely antithetical to the very concept and lifestyle, and the fact that he thinks killing his own animals makes him a vegetarian just makes him. . . well, an idiot.

Every other animal, fish --- chicken, steak, bologna, uhm, what else--- I'm sure u will understand that someone had to do the dirty work of killing these animals that we find nicely packed in grocery stores!!! So what that he kills the animals that he eats? Just because you eat what someone else killed doesn't make u any better. Besides the story behind these large commercial butcher houses point to the fact that they treat animals worse than what you report in this story.

The Inquirer a sleaze tabloid?

First off, I was linked here via another news site.

I so strongly disagree with this writers analysis that I am thinking this is just a tabloid trying to generate hits via "shock."

Calling Zuckerberg "confused" because he mentions that he has basically become a vegetarian shows that the author cannot infer facts from other facts. Obviously Zuckerberg has put off and avoided killing animals and thus mainly eats vegetarian because of this personal challenge.

So fellow commenters, is this news site legitimate? Is it just this author?

I did not get a "parody" vibe in the article, it seems to try to make Mark look like a freak (possibly a future serial killer.) Although the only person who comes out looking like they don't understand how to interact with people is the author.

Poor article

Understanding and taking responsibility for where food comes from strikes me as an admirable goal, and article's judgemental tone relects poorly on itself. It is clear that the point of what Mark is doing has been completely missed. Take for example the quote "This year I've basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I'm eating is from animals I've killed myself". This obviously means that Mark has eaten hardly any meat, this year (hence basically being a vegetarian), because of the difficulty required to eat meat (i.e. to have to kill it himself).

If Mark is classed as a serial killer for this, then every meat eater on the planet is worse than a serial killer.

Right Track

This article is poorly written & horribly slanted. This is not bizzare. Farmers have been doing it for generations. A few years ago, a movement started to be more involved directly in the process of harvesting meat. There are classes & restaurants all over NYC, as just one example. My son & I always processed our own fish & seafood. After he became involved in 4-H programs & he learned the reality of slaughter houses & the myriad of undesireable injections & feed substances, we started raising our own sheep & goats. They have a royal life. They have a quick & humane death. Our last project was a Scottish Highland Steer. From raising to table, my sons' maturity level blossomed, grades rose, and insight grew. And financially? Our meat is graded highest every time, organic, & would fetch $10.-$16 per lb at the store. Our cost? $0.25-$1 per lb.
We eat less meat, are immune from that portion of food price increases for 1.2 yrs, & raise our favorites; duck, quail, pheasant, goose, sheep, & goat. We have helped teach others & learned from many.
Who cares about Zuckerberg's financial wealth. My hats off to anyone who strives for a wealth of ideas, perspectives, and practices. Odd behavior Lest you forget it was the norm in the 1940's for the fowl @ a grocers to be butchered while you wait, let alone doing it yourself to cull non prodercers in the home coop. Just pick up a '50's and earlier Betty Crocker Cook Book. The instructions are neatly detailed within its covers.

Ditto author is an IDIOT :-)

Ditto this: "When you are at the point that you are so petty as to describe someone who hunts as a serial killer, you are so far removed from reality as to be classified an idiot."

Unless he's hunting and eating people :-)

But if you know any foodie at all (it's obvious the author is not), there's a big movement to "nose to tail" eating of grass fed animals...i.e., respect your food as a precious resource and waste little of it. Italians, Europeans, and Asians all eat "offal" and "sweetbreads" (aka "guts"). Most hunters also respect the land/animals a lot more instead of paving it to build McMansions because they understand it's a precious resource.

Sure beats the unknown slab o' stuff on top of styrofoam you find at a supermarket ;-)
If you raise/eat naturally grass fed (as opposed to mass produced ones that are fed chicken poop) beef/pork, it'll taste craploads better so you don't have to bury it with ketchup or whatever you british do :-)

I personally think it is admirable that Zuckerberg realizes how removed our society has become from our food supply. These animals will suffer and die more in a typical mass supply chain that at the hands of Zuckerberg himself. I think that there would be many more vegetarians if they were forced to kill and/or butcher their own meat. If people aren't prepared for the reality of their food then they NEED to make some changes with their diet.

As another commenter said, anyone who equates being a serial killer with killing your own food is an idiot. The author needs to get his head out of his rear and wake up to reality.

Meat is Murder... Delicious Murder

Regardless of the priggish, hypocritical tone of this article and Zuckerberg's obvious confusion, the overall idea here is a good one. If you eat any storebought meat at all you have killed a great many animals, more than just one man - even The Great Zuckerberg - could ever kill in his life. If you don't know where all that meat comes from then you're retarded. death by slaughterhouse is horrendous, especially in Kosher slaughterhouses. Every meat eater should be forced to kill their own meat at least once in life. Maybe they wouldn't eat so much of it. That said, I eat meat and if I had to kill it for myself I would probably stop eating everything but chicken. God, I hate chickens. Death to all chickens! Oh yeah, and why heck is Zuckerberg eating goat? That's just nasty.

kudos for Mark Z

I am the typical left-wing tree-hugging vegetarian (but perhaps with an atypical self-deprecating sense of humor). What Zuckerberg is doing is great. The chickens and goats will indeed be happy, because in the end he will kill less of them than if he bought the same meat at the grocery store. And contrary to the article, hunting-- when done right-- is the most humane way to get your food (other than being a vegetarian). If everyone had to kill their own animals (or even watch while others killed them), they would eat a lot less of them.

How many ways can you go wrong

First, lets start with the title of article. Do you really think this man is a serial killer of any type? Second this report is pretty one sided jounialism. How and what do you think meat comes from, plants? It appears like magic out of a deliver truck at your local grocery store? Killing, harvesting, and butching animals started with the cave man and woman to the present. If he is true to his word, he will reduce his amount of meat due the fact he has to kill the beast and that is not going to happen very day. I believe this report is out of touch with reality, just like the article I just read where it is great that gasoline cost $4 to $5 a gallon and wonderful for the country and economy. I hope you do not have to wait too long in line for your big Mac hamburger.
